Fairfax High Plans More Than 30 'Career Talks' for Students

Speakers of professions from engineering to nursing to finance will visit the school through April.

Fairfax High students will get the chance to explore a wide breadth of possible career choices over the next several months as the school kicks off its Career/Talk series.

The series will feature more than 30 speakers from various professions such as engineering, nursing, and finance, as well as entrepreneurs.

Assistant Principal Maureen Keck said the series is part of a new school initiative they call "Future Readiness."

"We have created this new speaker series to increase our students’ awareness of different career fields and stimulate their thinking about their postgraduate plans," Keck said.

It can be hard for a student leaving high school or entering college to pick a career choice, and Keck said the school hopes this series will help offer students some guidance, by hearing from professionals currently working in these fields.

"Many of us spent our high school and college years not knowing what professions we wanted to enter, and we often changed our mind," she explained. "It is likely that several of our students will have as many as a dozen different jobs over their lifetime, including some positions that don’t even exist today."

Keck some of the speakers include former Rebels.

"We create meaningful opportunities for our students to visualize their future by bringing them face-to-face with different professionals, including alumni who once walked the halls of FHS as students," she said.

The series will consist of regular 30-minute talks on various subjects and fields, and students will have the opportunity to ask questions.

A running list of upcoming speakers and fields will be featured in morning announcements and in the Career office on campus so students can plan ahead for the sessions they wish to attend.

"We hope [teachers and parents] will encourage [their] students to attend the sessions that most interest them and ask questions of the speakers," Keck said.
