Today: July 4th Traffic Detours & Road Closures

Whether or not you're headed downtown for the parade and other July 4th festivities, getting around could be tricky.

No matter what your plans are Thursday for July 4th, if you live in the City of Fairfax or nearby, you may want to know about certain traffic detours and road closures in effect for the day's parade and other festivities.

READ HERE for a full list of July 4th events, schedule, and important information on parking and shuttles.

Independence Day Parade — Vehicles and pedestrians traveling on Route 236/Main Street will be detoured to North Street from 8 a.m. until after the parade concludes, which is expected to be around noon.

Also at that time, affected portions of University Drive, George Mason Boulevard and Route 123/Chain Bridge Road traffic will be rerouted, and parking will be restricted on those roads.

Fireman’s Day
University Drive will close from Sager Avenue to Armstrong Street from about 12 to 4 p.m. for the Old Fashioned Fireman’s Day at Fire Station 3, 4081 University Drive.

Evening Show
— To allow spectators to exit from Fairfax High School (3501 Rebel run) after the evening show, no through-traffic will be permitted from about 9:15 p.m. to about 11 p.m. on Old Lee Highway.

If the fireworks are postponed to July 5, the Old Lee Highway detours will be in effect at that time.
