I grew up on Long Island, got a BSE in chem. engineering from Princeton in 1963 (before they admitted women), studied economics at the University of the Americas in Mexico City (1965-66), where I met wife Sallie, and at the Institut Universitaire d'Etudes Europennes in Turin, Italy (1966-67), taught economics for two years at Potsdam State in NY (1967-69), and finally went back for a PhD at Rice U. (1969-72).
At CIA (1972-2003) I worked mainly on European issues, such as the single currency, managed the KAOS softball team, and was awarded the Career Intelligence Medal in 2004. Other interesting experiences included summer jobs in  Germany in 1961 (visited East Berlin two weeks after the wall went up and saw tyranny first-hand) and Sweden in 1963, and being a civil rights worker in Mississippi in 1964 because I thought all Americans should have the right to vote. We moved to Mason Neck in 1978 and daughters Bradley (Thomas Jefferson '01, Cornell '06) and Ashley (Hayfield, '05, Johns Hopkins '09) grew up here. Currently I am secretary of the Mason Neck Lions Club and the Mason Neck Citizens Association, and editor of the Hallowing Point Newsletter, but my main avocation is working for more rational drug policies that would treat each drug according to how dangerous it actually is.
