Woodson created its first hall of fame to celebrate the school's 50th anniversary.

Bryan Glenn's Disappearance and Death: Behind the Story

A glimpse inside Patch's newsroom decisions in covering the disappearance, and death, of Woodson High School senior.

It's been an emotional month for the Glenn family, the community that embraced them, and the folks sent to report on all this. It's been more than two weeks since Bryan Glenn went missing after dropping his younger brother off at Woodson High School. It's been just more than a week since volunteers found his body on the edge of Thaiss Park. Hours ago, I returned home from Bryan's funeral at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale to read a thought-provoking rehash by the Washington Post's Tom Jackman of the nightmarish two weeks in which the Woodson-Fairfax community rallied around the search for the senior football player. Jackman clarifies some points about the Woodson student's disappearance, how police reacted and why the Post didn't …

Police: No Predator on the Loose, Cause of Bryan's Death Could Take Months to Determine

City and county police say there's no threat to the public.

Police say they believe there is no threat to the public after volunteers found the body of missing Woodson student Bryan Glenn in the woods near Thaiss Park on Columbus Day. Fairfax City Police recently stepped up patrols around Pickett Road, Silver King Court and Thaiss Park, but not as a response to a predator or perceived threat. "The entire City of Fairfax is a low crime area. We have not had a murder in three years," said Sgt. Joe Johnson of the City of Fairfax Police Department. "The park is safe. It was a request we received from the community and we have stepped up patrols until this case is closed." Virginia's Medical Examiner's Office completed the autopsy of the body on Wednesday and confirmed the family's identification of the…

Uh huh. I'm the worst here. Because I'm the one who is saying that some poor kids suicide is MY business because it happened in a park, right? Because appeasing my curiosity is more important that proper police procedures or the privacy of the family, right? Oh no, I'm wrong. That was you. Clearly, like many in this area, you were not taught empathy and compassion as a child. Sad really. That and…   more ›

Community Without Answers After Teen's Death

Bryan Glenn remembered by German classmates; Fairfax County police still waiting to hear from medical examiner's office.

The Woodson High School community is still waiting, quietly mourning three days after senior Bryan Glenn's body was discovered Monday by volunteers in the woods near Thaiss Park. Find Bryan flyers are still posted all over the city, but a closer look reveals a different, painful atmosphere than the one surrounding last week's frantic search for the missing football player and Monday's shocking discovery. The desperate pleas for information on Bryan's whereabouts have transformed into messages of support on family Facebook walls.  Officers announced the official identification of Bryan's body Wednesday, confirming what most, including friends and family, already knew. Police are now waiting for the medical examiner's report, which should …

A Mom Speaks Out on Dealing With Community's Loss

Blogger says community came together during this crisis.

Editor's Note: This blog post was written by Nicole Dash, a mother of four living in Annandale. Check out her blog, Tiny Steps Mommy. The children are in music class and I thought about quickly publishing a “Mom Who Gives Back” article or perhaps answering a couple of questions for my Mom-to-Mom advice column. Instead, I find myself thinking about the 17-year-old boy Bryan Glenn from my neighborhood high school who was found dead in the woods yesterday exactly a week after going missing. The details are still coming in, but regardless of the WHY or HOW it is a tragic loss. You can’t go two feet in my neighborhood without seeing missing person posters for the young man who suddenly disappeared. His car was left abandoned in the parking lot …

This blog was nothing more than one mother living in the community expressing her condolences and demonstrating how this tragedy impacted her community. Not meant to make some broader point. She did not write the original title nor did she have control over the placement in the search engine. She didn't even ask for it to be run in the paper. The paper asked her to run it one she had written it …   more ›

Family, Friends in Shock After Finding Teen's Body in Woods

To honor Bryan Glenn, Woodson High School students will wear black to school Tuesday.

Family and friends expressed shock after volunteers found the body of missing Woodson student Bryan Glenn in the woods Monday near Thaiss Park. "With tremendous sadness in our hearts, we learned this afternoon of our son Bryan’s death," Mike and Rosella Glenn said in an email to Patch. "This devastating news has been a great shock to our family and friends. Right now this family and our community are grieving and we need to let the investigation run its course." Fairfax County Police were reluctant to identify the body during a press conference Monday afternoon. The Glenn family issued a statement that evening, however, confirming what most already knew.  Bryan's body was discovered by volunteers who gathered with the Glenn family to help …

Sadly, I saw the police admit they did not search certain parts of the woods where he was found. They may not have even gone far enough down the path for the dogs to pick up a scent. It seems like they maybe dismissed him as a runaway and weren't as thorough as they should have been while searching. This is sad, since his family could have had an answer almost a week earlier if police found him.   more ›

Woodson Marks Homecoming Weekend with Season's First Win

Cavs win 28 – 21.

The Cavaliers saved their best gridiron performance of the season for Homecoming as they put together a complete game to defeat T.C. Williams 28 – 21 at Pat Cunningham Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The win was a pleasant addition to Woodson’s 50th anniversary festivities.  Woodson's win propels them into the final weeks of the season as they look to add wins to their 1 – 5 record. On the game’s opening drive, the Titans drove the length of the field before Woodson picked off a Titans’ pass in the Cavs’ end zone. Unfortunately for Woodson, the Cavs fumbled the ball on the interception return. The Titans took advantage of the miscue by scooping up the loose ball and taking it in for a short score. The Titans missed the extra point, but …
