'They're Crazy,' Cuccinelli Says of GMU Officials

Virginia's Attorney General told gun rights advocates he considers the school's gun ban bad policy that doesn't promote safety.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) was certain Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli had sold them out.  “His opinion on the GMU ban went against us,” said VCDL Vice President Jim Snyder in his introduction of Cuccinelli at Thursday night’s membership meeting in the Mason Governmental Center. Cuccinelli soon allayed the group’s fears: “As Attorney General I cannot undercut my client by going out and saying something like, ‘You’re idiots for doing this.’  But the case is over, and I can now say I think they’re crazy.” In January 2011, the Virginia Supreme Court upheld George Mason University's prohibition against guns in campus buildings and at sports and entertainment events.  The Attorney General’s office had written a legal opinion …

Cuccinelli Now Supports GMU Gun Ban

In a video (included with this article), Cuccinelli tells a VCDL gathering, "I've heard the college question.  They don't have the legal authority to pass the regulations they're passing that trump what the General Assembly has said." Last week at George Mason University, VCDL protested the school's ban on faculty and students carrying guns on campus, and on all people carrying guns inside …

Armed Protesters Gather at GMU

Virginia Citizens Defense League protested the university's policy excluding students and faculty from carrying guns on campus.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) protested at George Mason University Wednesday. VCDL members and volunteers were visibly and legally armed. Anti-gun advocates from the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence counter-protested. The university has a ban on weapons for all students and faculty. However, those who aren't students or faculty may carry guns on campus, if they have the proper permit.  The Constitution of Virginia protects the right of citizens to keep and bear arms from government infringement.  An overview of Virginia's gun laws are posted by the Virginia State Police. "I kind of understand both sides, I'm not really lenient towards either," said Julie Manausa, a conflict analysis major at Mason. "I understand the need for …
