Volunteers Needed to Help Prepare Tax Returns

The Fairfax County Department of Family Services needs volunteers from January to mid-April 2013.

Fairfax County is seeking volunteers to help prepare tax returns for low-income families. The Volunteers Income Tax Assistance (VITA) in partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Family Services needs volunteers from January to mid-April 2013 to prepare taxes, greet and screen customers, serve as translators, and provide IT support at library sites or act as a site coordinator. According to their website, each volunteer is needed for three to six hours a week. All volunteers will be trained in how to use TaxWise and Tax Law software. The training is free. Volunteers will be certified as a tax preparer by the IRS upon successful completion of their training. To apply to become a volunteer, interested persons can register online.  …

Virginia Tax Department to Offer Debit Cards for 2012 Tax Returns

Beginning in 2013, residents will no longer have the option to receive paper checks for refunds and can only use direct deposit to their bank account or receive a prepaid debit card.

Virginia residents who are used to receiving paper checks for their income tax refunds will only have two options to choose from starting next year: direct deposit or prepaid debit card. According to the Virginia Department of Taxation’s website, paper check refunds will not be issued in 2013 due to a requirement from the 2012-2014 Appropriations Act which states income tax refunds can only be issued by direct deposit or on a prepaid debit card beginning with tax year 2012 returns. The change, according to the department’s website, is part of a cost-savings initiative.  This is the first time the prepaid debit card has been offered as an option.
