Appletree School Students Paint With Elephants

The young students were extended a special invitation by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus at the Patriot Center.

Young students from Appletree School in Fairfax got a real treat Thursday when the staff from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus invited them to the Patriot Center for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to paint with an elephant. Ringling Bros. partnered with Young Rembrandts to host the painting party, featuring Ringling’s star elephant, Kelly Ann. The students joined a cast of clowns on the arena floor for the party and, prior to painting, Kelly Ann showed off her athleticism by dunking a basketball, catching a football and kicking a soccer ball, in addition to playing the harmonica. I'm so sick & tired of seeing free publicity for this cruelty-infused for-profit enterprise. "Journalistic" entities constantly "report" the arrival of the circus & paint it as a fun, happy, wholesome, benign endeavour. About 15 volunteers drew placards describing their injuries. Acting as victims, they lay throughout the Patriot Center as an officer acting as the shooter ran about the concession loop, shooting blanks and providing a target for police to overcome and arrest. Fairfax firefighters donned ballistic vests and helmets before joining the police in their search of the area, stopping to assess and …

UFC Returns to Patriot Center

Korean Zombie takes on Dustin Poirier

The latest UFC event at the Patriot Center in Fairfax City matched 24 fighters for Facebook and Fuel TV fans, as well as about 5,000 attendees. UFC on Fuel 3: Korean Zombie vs. Dustin Poirier brought fighters from around the world to compete, but fans cheered loudest for local heroes. Ultimate Fighter winner, Amir Sadollah, from Richmond, pulled off a razor-thin win over Jorge Lopez. Lopez wrestled Sadollah against the cage for much of the fight, but Sadollah stifled Lopez’s offense and took over the match in the third round to secure a split-decision victory. Falls Church’s Kamal Shalarus did not fare as well. Stunned early in the first round by a high kick, a dazed Shalarus failed to defend a rear-naked choke from Brazilian fighter …
