Friday was the City's first annual Mother-Son Campout, and luckily, the rain held out long enough for all the planned activities to take place. Families trickled in to Van Dyck Park between 5 and 6 p.m. to set up their tents in the large clearing, and their folding chairs around the makeshift fire pit. Hamburgers and hot dogs hit the grill at 6, alongside big bowls of potato salad, fruit and chips. Mayor Scott Silverthorne popped by to eat dinner with the families and enjoy a few tosses of the softball with some of the boys. To work off dinner, staff from the Parks and Recreation Department led activities such as kickball, basketball and a mother-son obstacle course. Fairfax City council members support the Park and Recreation Department's request to close North Street and return to the former Fall Festival route. They are split, however, on whether to move the annual Lunch with Santa event out of downtown Fairfax. Director Mike McCarty and events superintendent Leslie Herman presented new additions to the city's annual event line-up and changes to existing festivals at Tuesday's council meeting. This year, Parks and Recreation plans to utilize an old Fall Festival route rather than keep one the department has tried over the last two years. Grab your camera and visit Fairfax City parks for a chance to win a certificate and a place in a special showcase at Van Dyck Park. The Parks/Trails Photo Contest is open to all ages. Winners will be selected in three age categories (18 and older, 13-17, 12 and under) by the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department. Photos ranked third place and up will get a spot at Van Dyck Park at Trails Day on June 2. The annual event offers a chance to clean up parks, take a tour bicycle ride through Fairfax City and participate in the Van Dyck-wide scavenger hunt.
