Fairfax City Family Honored with Volunteer Service Award

The Jenkins family has donated nearly 450 hours of service to Our Daily Bread over the past three years.

  The Jenkins Family of Fairfax City was honored last week with Volunteer Fairfax's 2013 Fairfax County Volunteer Service Award. The longtime local residents won in the family category for their service to Our Daily Bread. Diane Jenkins works for Fairfax County’s Housing Department, and Dave Jenkins retired from there after many years of service. Their son Marshall is attending community college in the area. "They all help us in various capacities at various times when they can and when we call on them," said Heather Webb, Our Daily Bread's communications manager. "Dave is our most frequent volunteer, calling our Food Bridge clients each week to let them know when to expect a food delivery or gift cards when they are due to receive food." …

Stuff the Bus Raises 1,000 Pounds of Food for Our Daily Bread

Next stop is Fair City Shoppers Food in Fairfax.

Fairfax nonprofit Our Daily Bread received over 1,000 pounds of food in a day with the help of Fairfax County's Stuff the Bus program. This program raises money and restocks food stores for local families in need. The decorated FASTRAN bus stopped at Walmart in Fairfax City to collect food and money donations for Our Daily Bread Feb. 2. Sharon Bulova, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, stopped by to help out. Our Daily Bread gained 1,000 pounds of food and $868 from the event. Stuff the Bus runs from Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 21) to President's Day (Feb. 18) with the bus stopping at different locations throughout the county to raise food and money for various nonprofits. So far Stuff the Bus has raised 6,500 pounds…

Our Daily Bread Needs Community Contributions

Derecho's destruction means more low-income families need food. Can you help restock the fridge?

Thousands of Northern Virginia residents were without power after the Derecho swept through Fairfax County on June 29. For some residents, re-stocking the refrigerator is a nuisance. For low-income families, it can be a true hardship, especially when their weekly pay might be less than planned because work was closed due to power outages. Clients of the nonprofit Our Daily Bread are in need of grocery gift cards in $10 and $20 increments so they can restock their refrigerators with perishable items such as fresh produce, milk, eggs, and meat. ODB does not provide non-perishable items to clients, but rather these small gift cards that families will be able to use to purchase the non-perishable goods that are best suited for their dietary …

Empty Bowls, Silent Auction Benefit Needy Families

Event organized by Our Daily Bread.

More than 300 community members gathered at Our Daily Bread’s fourth annual Empty Bowls event on February 23 at the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center in Fairfax City. Attendees selected handcrafted bowls donated by local artists, students and community members and enjoyed a simple meal of soup, bread and desserts donated by local restaurants and businesses. The evening also included jazz music from the Fairfax Saxophone Quartet and raffles and silent auction items. Proceeds from the event will support Our Daily Bread’s efforts to provide food, financial assistance, financial education and other support to working families throughout the Fairfax County area Dozens of volunteers made this event possible, including James Madison Art Honor …
