Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in the system for the weekend of May 17-19. This weekend's rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange and Green lines. Blue or Yellow lines riders can breathe easy, there is no scheduled track work on either line this weekend. This weekend's rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines. Green Line trains will operate normally between Greenbelt and Branch Avenue. Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. Sunday, two hours early, to accommodate the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. If you thought the Silver Line would continue to be the focus of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for the foreseeable future, think again. Metro has a proposed a series of improvements to help the system keep up with demand on other lines. For the past year and a half, the agency has been working to unveil "Momentum," a $26 billion spending plan that focuses on, among other things, creating new connections and bypassing others that are holding riders up. Taking the Metro to get around this weekend? Here’s what to expect. According to a Metro news release: Orange Line Orange Line trains will single track between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly to allow for platform reconstruction, and between East Falls Church and West Falls Church for work associated with the Silver Line extension project. Metrorail riders using the Orange Line between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church stations this weekend should allow an additional 20 minutes of travel time. The Dulles Metrorail Project, which is building the new Silver Line from Falls Church to Reston, is installing cables this weekend. This installation will delay Orange Line trains. Starting at 10 p.m. tonight, and continuing through closing on Sunday night, , shuttle buses will replace Orange Line trains between these two stations. Metro to tweak schedule in the spring.
Metro will be making adjustments to rush hour service in the spring, according to a recent report in the The Washington Post. The changes come in response to changing population patterns and to get ready to accommodate service on the Silver Line, which is scheduled to begin in late 2013. Starting in June, the peak period service will include more Orange Line trains coming from the line’s western end in Northern Virginia into D.C. Fewer Blue Line trains will serve the downtown’s west side. More trains from Northern Virginia will serve the downtown’s east side. As far as the Silver Line, Metro says it wants to give riders time to get used to the new patterns and for Metro to make possible adjustments before the new line is up and running. …
