Meet Brad, a Boxer pup with a sad beginning and big hopes for a bright future.
In rescue, we see a lot of dogs who come from neglectful situations or have had a tough start in life. They all have unique personalities, and some dogs need a little more TLC and rehabilitation than others to make the transition to a new home. But even pups from the most troubling situations, once they’re given love, stability and security, can leave the past behind and live in the now. We continue to be amazed at how resilient and hopeful dogs are, and that is certainly one of the many things that we can learn from them. Brad is one of those dogs who has been mistreated by people, but still has an innocence and innate sweetness in him that he wants to share with a person he can trust. He has never known what a loving family can be; …

Meet Leo, a handsome St. Bernard-mix with a sweet, gentle spirit and accepting nature.
Hey there, Patch readers. My name is Leo and I’m a soft, fluffy ball of sweetness with a very laid-back attitude. Mutts Matter thinks I’m a St. Bernard-mix, which makes sense given how tall and handsome I am. I have a soft and flowing creamy-white coat, and big, soulful brown eyes. I’m about four or five years old and weigh 85 pounds, but I could stand to put on some more weight due to the lack of care I received in my last home. Just because my last owner wasn’t good to me is no reason for me to hold a grudge against the rest of the world, so I stay positive and friendly with everyone I meet, no matter who they are. I was rescued out of a shelter in rural South Carolina, after being saved from my home by Animal Control. I was underweight …

Ricco is a playful, affectionate Miniature Pinscher mix who will make someone a great companion.
Hi, guys! My name is Ricco and I’m a spunky Min-Pin mix in search of my person. I’m two years old and only weigh about 15 pounds, so I’m a little guy, but I’ve got a lot of spirit. I was rescued out of a shelter in northern Virginia after my owner surrendered me with my pug sibling because he was working long hours and could no longer take care of us. I still don’t get it; we weren’t much trouble and were both very dedicated to him. This whole experience has been really tough on me. I didn't do well being abandoned in the shelter and was terrified of all the noise and commotion. My pug brother has already been adopted, so I sit here and wait for my new family. Luckily, my new foster mom, Lisa, really gets me. She lives in a quiet condo …

Sweet Monty was saved by a local teen from life on the streets and is looking for his new family
Monty is the true definition of a love bug. He’s a sweet, affectionate and playful pit-mix who just wants to be loved and be part of a family. He’s a handsome boy who’s only a year old and weighs in at about 60 pounds. His body is still playing catch-up with his big, blocky head, and he has a big, warm bully smile that lights up when he sees you. Monty’s story is one that demonstrates the best and worst in people. He was found running free in an abandoned parking lot near a major highway by Lauren Bradford, a Good Samaritan and local senior at Fairfax High School. Lauren’s parents were away for the weekend, and she took it upon herself to take this sweet pup in, canvass the local neighborhoods and post flyers and ads on Craigslist in …

The event includes the raffle of a $1,250 diamond necklace, with all proceeds going to Mutts Matter.
Businesses of all shapes and sizes donate to charity, and they often give to the large, name brand organizations with big marketing budgets. Everyone can rally around the fight to cure cancer, help kids in need or support victims of natural disasters, and all of these things are very worthy and important causes. What’s not as common, however, is to see prominent businesses get behind local dog rescue. Rescue groups like Mutts Matter get most of their corporate sponsorships from companies in the pet industry that understand the importance of rescue and know the hard, sad facts – that five to seven million animals enter the shelter system each year, and over four million don’t make it out. As an all-volunteer, nonprofit rescue, Mutts …

Meet Zen, a gentle, sweet Shar-Pei looking for his forever home.
Need a little calm canine energy in your life? Meet Zen, a laid-back and super-sweet Chinese Shar-Pei who’s about five years old and weighs in at 50 pounds. Zen is a unique and striking dog who has a very gentle way about him, and just wants to be loved and to find his new place in the world. After being purchased from an Arizona breeder, Zen was surrendered by his owner, who claimed he was working longer hours and wasn’t able to care for him. Poor Zen lived in a home with his family for over four years and then suddenly found himself abandoned in a shelter for six long months. This is, unfortunately, a story that happens to good dogs every day. Because of his sweet, calm demeanor, Zen quickly became a staff favorite at the shelter, and …

Fonzie is a fun, lovable and goofy Bulldog who will make a great addition to any family.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Fonzie last week. He greeted me at the door with a huge bully smile and happy tail wag, then escorted me to his couch where he sat down and shared some love in exchange for a rub. Fonzie is a very friendly, social dog who warms up quickly to new people and rolls with the punches. He’s amusing just to watch, and reminds you of a football team’s mascot or a dog who’d be in commercials. He is full of personality and definitely star material. Fonzie is a handsome English Bulldog who is about five years old and weighs 70 pounds. He has unique coloring with striking brindle patches on his coat, and a smile that lights up and opens as wide as his head when he sees you. He was more energetic and playful …

Sweet Carolina is an affectionate, playful and good-natured Bassett Hound mix in search of a loving home.
Meet sweet Carolina, an adorable Bassett Hound/Border Collie mix with a friendly disposition and an engaging spirit. Carolina is not your typical laid-back Bassett Hound; she still has a nice mix of youthful energy and playfulness to share with her new family. She’s only about a year-and-a-half old and weighs 28 pounds, has a sweet smile, big brown eyes, cute floppy ears and a gorgeous, shiny black-and-white coat. She is a friendly, affectionate pup who would be great with kids and other dogs, and is always up for a new adventure. Carolina was rescued out of a shelter in rural South Carolina after being seized by Animal Control and removed from her home. She was diagnosed and treated for heartworm, which is transmitted by mosquitos and …

Duke is a loving Mastiff who's ready to be your loyal companion.
Hey there! My name is Duke. I’m a young, handsome and loving Bull Mastiff Mix, with attention-grabbing good looks. A lot of folks say I’m pretty, but I prefer “regal” or “handsome,” and “dashing” also has a nice ring to it. I’m about eighteen-months-old and weigh 80 pounds, but I’m still filling out and have some puppy playfulness and curiosity in me. I was rescued out of a shelter in Maryland, after my owners decided to surrender me because they were moving. So much for a lifetime commitment... When the shelter got too full and my time was running out, Mutts Matter stepped in to save me. Here I am today, ready for my second chance at a great life. Not only am I good looking with a big, beautiful smile, but I really love people. I'm a very…

Goldie Locks is sweet, playful, energetic and eager to please.
Since the loss of power in our region prevented so many from meeting Goldie last week, we are featuring this lovable pup again. _____ Hey there. My name is Goldie Locks, but my rescue friends all call me Goldie. I’m a Golden Retriever-Chow mix and weigh about 45 pounds, but still have some filling out to do. I’m only a year old and very much a puppy—sweet, playful, energetic and eager to please. I was rescued out of a shelter in Maryland, after being picked up as a stray. It's hard to believe that no one came looking for me, but here I am ready to find my new family and start my new life. Mutts Matter set me up with a seasoned foster mom, who started working with me right away on basic commands. She says I’m incredibly smart and learn …
