Ride Metro Monday Morning? You May Have Been Overcharged

After Daylight Saving Time switch, Metro charged some riders peak fares even though they traveled during off-peak hours.

A yet unknown number of Metrorail riders accessing the system at unknown stations were charged peak fares Monday morning even though they traveled during off-peak hours, The Washington Post reports. Peak fares were charged until 10:30 a.m. instead of ending 9:30 a.m. Caroline Lukas, a metro spokesperson, discussed the accidental charges withThe Washington Post: Lukas said she didn’t know what caused the additional hour of peak fares, and she wouldn’t speculate on whether the problems stemmed from the change to daylight saving time. NBC Washington's transportation reporter Adam Tuss tweeted Monday afternoon that only a few faregates were impacted. "Metro says its clocks were NOT adjusted to daylight saving time this am," Tuss tweeted. It's …

Will Metrorail Extend the Orange Line Through Fairfax City?

Congressmen Gerry Connolly and Jim Moran recently introduced legislation that would study the extension of Metrorail into Centreville, Woodbridge and the Richmond Highway corridor.

Pipe dream or forward-thinking?  Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th district) and Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th district) have introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would authorize studying Metrorail's possible expansion through Fairfax City into Centreville and other areas of Northern Virginia.  The Northern Virginia Metrorail Extension Act (H.R. 907), which is now before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, specifically cites the idea of extending the Orange line into Centreville. It also proposes studying the possibility of extending the yellow line along the Route One corridor and the blue line along the I-95 corridor to Woodbridge.  “Residents in Prince William and western Fairfax County already experience …

No thanks, the addition of a metro stop brings the quality of an area down. I would prefer no such extension into Fairfax city as the one in Vienna is just fine.   more ›

Speak Out: Customer Service and Metro Bus Drivers

New training course was developed by Metro and is taught by a 20-year veteran bus driver.

Metro hopes to put all 2,500 of its bus drivers through a revamped customer service training by the end of 2014, The Washington Post reports. Though all drivers receive a customer service training when they first begin with Metro, the new training serves as a refresher course. Since the new training begin in October, 600 drivers have taken the course, which is taught by supervisor and trainer Roger Langston — a bus driver of 20 years, the Post reports. The training is partially a response to recent violence against bus drivers—like rock throwing and a stabbing. It is also meant to reduce the number of complaints the agency has received about bus drivers — more than 7,500 complaints over four years, according to the Post. What do you think…

Crime: Vienna Metro Station on Top 10 List

Electronic device "snatchings" up 30 percent from 2011 to 2012.

The Vienna Metro station made the top 10 list of stations with the most crime in Virginia, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority 2012 security report. Most of the crime increase on the Metro system wide from 2011 to 2012 is attributable to a 30 percent increase in snatches of small electronic devices and pickpockets, according to WMATA. There were 671 pick-pocketing incidents and electronic “snatchings” on the Metro system overall in 2012, up from 520 incidents in 2011. Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn will discuss the report Thursday during his security report to the Metro Board Safety and Security Committee. The report was released to the public Monday. The full list of the top 10 stations in Virginia …

Speak Out: Metro’s $26 Billion Improvement Plan

The primary obstacle for "Momentum," which includes a number of Orange Line projects, appears to be funding. What do you think about WMATA’s proposed capital plans? Tell us in the comments.

If you thought the Silver Line would continue to be the focus of  the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for the foreseeable future, think again. Metro has a proposed a series of improvements to help the system keep up with demand on other lines.  For the past year and a half, the agency has been working to unveil "Momentum," a $26 billion spending plan that focuses on, among other things, creating new connections and bypassing others that are holding riders up. The Washington Post has a story here. For Orange Line riders, the Post details one proposed project that could make a huge difference for those on Vienna-bound trains: Planners suggest creating what they call the “Rosslyn bypass.” New tracks would be built west …

Since this region swallowed the $5.6 to $6 Billion (depending on who fills out the Tifia letter of interest) Dulles Rail / Silver Line project, some of our so-called 'leaders' (hello Ms. Hudgins, member of Fairfax County BOS and the head of WMATA's Board) apparently decided not to present this idea themselves, but to have Richard Sarles of WMATA run this $26 Billion number up the flagpole for …   more ›

Metro: Inauguration Day Notched Nearly 780,000 Trips

The 2013 Inauguration Day metro ridership was significantly less than the 1.12 million trips four years earlier.

If you felt like Metro was less crowded this inauguration than in 2009, you were right. The transit agency recorded 779,787 passenger entries Monday, according to the Associated Press. Metro set its all-time ridership record on Inauguration Day 2009, recording 1.12 million rail trips. The transit agency told the AP that part of the reason for the lower ridership levels was that Monday was the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in addition to being Inauguration Day. That cut out many of the daily commuters who use the system and would have used the system regionwide in 2009. Lower ridership, however, did not mean the day went off without any hitches. After President Obama's inaugural ceremony concluded, Metro temporarily closed several stations…
