The governor signed bills requiring ignition interlocks for drivers on a restricted license.
Gov. Bob McDonnell signed two bills which require ignition interlocks for people convicted with a DUI. McDonnell spoke about the bills with reporters Tuesday in Dale City, where he attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for extended Express Lanes on I-95. McDonnell signed House Bill 279 (Iaquinto) and its companion Senate Bill 378 (McEachin), which requires "all individuals convicted of driving under the influence, including first-time offenders, to operate only vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device when driving on a restricted license." Virginia governor tells radio audience on WTOP Tuesday "I am not being vetted by his campaign."
On radio station WTOP Tuesday, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) ruled out the possibility of becoming the vice presidential choice of presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney. "I am not being vetted by his campaign," he told the radio audience. That doesn't completely shut the door if the Romney campaign came calling. McDonnell has not said he would say "no" to the VP slot if it were offered. The popular Republican governor, who received 59 percent of the vote before he was sworn in as the 71st head of the Commonwealth in 2010, said he plans to serve out his term, which ends in January 2014. McDonnell became chairman of the Republican Governors Association in 2011 and has campaigned for Romney in Virginia, as well as in Southern primary states…

Law goes into effect July 1.
RICHMOND (Capital News Service) — Gov. Bob McDonnell has signed legislation that will require first-time DUI offenders in Virginia to install a Breathalyzer in their vehicle to prevent them from driving while intoxicated. The governor signed House Bill 279 on Wednesday. As a result, beginning July 1, all Virginians convicted of DUI will have to have an ignition interlock installed in their vehicle. Currently, that requirement applies only to repeat offenders or first-time offenders with blood alcohol content higher than 0.15. Virginia will "join just 15 other U.S. states in requiring this proven effective technology for all persons convicted of drunk driving," Kurt Erickson, president of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, said …

Gas could reach $4.25 a gallon by end of April and gas tax increases are on the table in Virginia.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is worried about rising gas prices, fearing they could reach more than $4 by the end of April. Commuters are also starting to pay more attention, particularly with an ongoing debate in both Virginia and Maryland related to increasing gas taxes. “I am extremely concerned by recent reports that oil and gasoline prices continue to rise and gas could reach an average of $4.25 a gallon by April,” McDonnell stated in a release Tuesday. According to the release, “The average price for a gallon of gas has recently topped $3.53 a gallon, up 25 cents since January 1, and up from $3.17 a gallon a year ago.” If gas does in fact hit $4.25 a gallon by May, that would break the July 2008 record of $4.11, says the Washington …
