Rebs Win Fourth Consecutive Field Hockey Championship

Fairfax wins over Madison and Marshall in Liberty District tournament.

The Fairfax Field Hockey team entered the 2012 Liberty District Tournament looking to extend their streak as three-time defending champions. This year the Rebels charged through Madison and Marshall to secure their fourth consecutive Liberty District Championship. They started as the tournament's top seed based on their 6-0 regular season Liberty District record. After receiving a first round bye, the Rebels faced the fourth seed Madison Warhawks (8-8, 3-3), who advanced to the semifinals by beating the Langley Saxons in the tournament's opening round. Fairfax defeated Madison in the regular season in a very close game that went to overtime before the …

Rebs Field Hockey Wins All in Liberty District

The Fairfax Field Hockey team entered the last week of the regular season with a 13-1 record, undefeated in Liberty District play. With wins over Langley and second place Marshall, the Rebels could lock down the coveted top seed in the district tournament and berth in the Northern Region Tournament. Rebels started the week against the Langley Saxons (2-12, 2-3) on Oct. 9. In the first half, the game was back and forth with both teams able to string together passes through the midfield and deep into the opponent's territory. Rebels Take Down Seahawks 3-0

The Fairfax Rebels field hockey team played host to the South Lakes Seahawks for senior night at Harold Stalnaker Stadium on Oct. 3. The Rebels were looking to stay undefeated in Liberty District play as they honored seniors Shelby Allen, Amanda Blackwell, Shannon Cosgrove, Grace Holman, Katie Rossbach, Nikki Strickland and Sam Zelenack.  South Lakes got off to a fast start, pressing play into the Fairfax end of the field and drawing a couple of penalty corners. Rebels Survive Madison

Fairfax Rebels Field Hockey team went on the road Wednesday night to put their undefeated record to test against the Madison Warhawks.   After a scoreless first half, the Rebels started to gain momentum, winning possession and pressuring the Madison goal. The Rebels were able to turn the pressure into seven-second half penalty corners, but the Madison defense was able to limit the Rebels to just three shots on goal.  Three minutes left in the game, with the score still tied at 0, the Rebels suffered a yellow card penalty. The yellow card put the Rebels down a player for the final minutes of the game as well as the first two minutes of the overtime 7v7 period. In overtime…

Rebs Dominate Herndon Field Hockey Tournament

The Fairfax Rebels Field Hockey team dominated the field en route to the Herndon Invitational Tournament title and a 10-0 season record. The Rebels outscored their opponents 17-0 during the tournament by forcing play into the opponents zone. Rebels midfield, led by senior captain Sam Zelenack, senior Amanda Blackwell and junior Sara Allen, were able to thwart opponents attacks before they could get into the Fairfax circle and maintain possession in their opponent's zone. Woodson Field Hockey Scores 1-0 Against Oakton

Woodson's field hockey team played host to Concorde District foe Oakton on Wednesday night hoping to bounce back from last Friday’s loss to Westfield. Thanks to an early goal and solid defense, the Cavaliers returned to the win column with a hard-fought 1 – 0 victory over the Cougars at Woodson’s Pat Cunningham Stadium. Junior Victoria Huenemann tallied the game’s lone goal less than four minutes into the game.  The Cavaliers made the goal stand as the game winner with a fine defensive effort. Woodson’s senior goalie Jessica Peckins had a solid outing, turning away a number of Cougars’ scoring attempts. The defensive play of the night, however, might have belonged to junior …

The Oakton Cougars (4-3) played host to the Fairfax Rebels (4-0) Friday night to finish off the last week before district play begins.  The Rebels were able to press the Oakton goal early in the game, but were unable to crack a stout Oakton defense, despite drawing 11 first-half penalty corners. Despite the possession advantage, it was the Cougars who would get on the board first. Oakton senior captain Melissa Shebat split the Rebel defense on a fast counter attack and was able to beat charging Rebel goalie Mac Anderson to score. The Rebels pushed their record to 4-0 while Mac Anderson, Shelby Allen and the Rebels defense remained unscored upon. Early in the game there was a lot of back and forth before the Rebels took control and started pressing the Generals' goal. Fairfax broke through on a penalty corner when senior captain Sam Zelenack received a pass in the circle from junior midfielder Sara Allen and beat the goalie to the far post. The Rebels (2-0) hoped to extend their perfect record in a non-district matchup. Early in the first half the play went end to end with both teams creating opportunities but neither team able to capitalize on the scoreboard. As the first half wore on, the Rebels started to take control, earning six penalty corners and generating 11 shots.  Despite several sprawling saves by Chargers senior goalie Alexa McGee, the Rebels would finally break through when aenior Shannon Cosgrove was able to lift the rebound of a shot by junior Emily Freeman over McGee. Rebs Field Hockey Wins Over Rival Cavaliers

The early season renewal of the cross town rivalry between the Fairfax Rebels and the Woodson Cavaliers featured two teams undefeated through the first week of the season. The Rebels (1-0) were coming off a victory over Robinson, while the Cavaliers (3-0-2) were coming off a successful performance at the Under the Lights tournament at Lee High School. The Rebels controlled play in the first half of the game, keeping the ball in the Cavaliers side of the field.
