School Board OKs Study to Move Students Out of Fairfax, Lanier

Board members plan to authorize a boundary study in the spring, implementation in fall 2014.

Fairfax County School Board officials voted unanimously Thursday night to move ahead with a boundary study that looks to relocate county students attending Lanier Middle and Fairfax High School in an effort to solve Fairfax City overcrowding. Sixty-five percent of students attending city schools live in Fairfax County, according to a scope study conducted this fall. For that reason, they're a large part of what is putting city schools over enrollment. This year, FHS is over capacity by about 300 students; Lanier isn't far behind, with projections showing enrollment only about 10 students under capacity. The scope revealed FHS would be 600 students over capacity by 2017. The board met with city schools officials in September to start …

Judging by the unplanned construction underway at Frost and other schools this winter, it appears this decision has already been made. Is this payback for forcing Fairfax City to build the new bus depot on Pickett Road?   more ›

Schools Officials Secure Court Order Against Fairfax Underground

Fairfax County Public Schools officials were granted a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction mandating the online forum remove files with grades from Fairfax High School students.

Update 5:20 p.m.: Fairfax Underground founder and administrator Cary Wiedemann responded to the suit against him tonight on his website. The full text of his response appears below. As the order was issued without notice I was not provided any chance to respond to the school board's petition. I have a very limited time to file a Motion to Dissolve, and am currently exploring the merits of doing so, but as the injunction expires on January 4th, 2013 I may well abide by this temporary order and focus my efforts on ensuring the injunction doesn't become permanent. In compliance with the injunction I am currently performing a full MySQL database backup to preserve all of the original records, as I need to modify the offending post in order to …

Marching Rebs Dominate Season With Big Wins and Solo Standouts

Two Fairfax High School students make Senior Regional Orchestra.

Editor's Note: This was written by Cathy Crawford, director of communications for FHS Band Boosters. Email your school and sports news to whitney@patch.com. The Fairfax Marching Rebels and the FHS Band Boosters truly appreciate the tremendous support of the Fairfax community and are eager to share some of this year's accomplishments. The 2012 Marching Rebels have been extremely busy since the week of Aug. 6, when they started working on this year's show, Metamorphosis. Before the school year even began, the Marching Rebels had spent two weeks at home band camp and a week at away band camp in Orkney Springs, Va. perfecting their show. In addition to performing for the community during halftime of all the Fighting Rebels varsity football …

It's been very gratifying to see the tremendous amount of work the band has put into this show paying off for them. Mr. Johnson constantly tells the kids that it's not about winning trophies; it's about pushing yourself as a band to get the most possible out of the show. Based on reactions from the fans, from the judges, and from the other bands (who are notoriously hard to impress) who have seen…   more ›

Editor's Note: Written by Mike Cosgrove. Send your sports news to whitney@patch.com. The Fairfax Field Hockey team entered the last week of the regular season with a 13-1 record, undefeated in Liberty District play. With wins over Langley and second place Marshall, the Rebels could lock down the coveted top seed in the district tournament and berth in the Northern Region Tournament. Rebels started the week against the Langley Saxons (2-12, 2-3) on Oct. 9. In the first half, the game was back and forth with both teams able to string together passes through the midfield and deep into the opponent's territory.
