Fairfax Schools Step Up Security After Conn. Shooting

Elementary schools lock all outside doors, police increase patrols after Friday's tragic school shooting.

Fairfax schools are taking extra precautions since the tragic shooting Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn that left 20 students and six adult employees dead.  Fairfax County Police will increase their patrols across all Fairfax schools this week, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Jack Dale said in a statement. "This is not in response to any specific threat but rather a police initiative to enhance safety and security around the schools and to help alleviate the understandably high levels of anxiety," Dale said. Asst. Principal at Providence Takes the Lead at Daniels Run

Adam Erbrecht will start his new role in July.

After a year as assistant principal at Providence Elementary School Adam Erbrecht is moving on. But not far.  Starting July 2, the Centreville resident will shift his office from Jermantown Road in Fairfax City to Old Lee Highway to start as principal at Daniels Run Elementary School. "I became interested in applying for the Daniels Run principalship because of the wonderful family feeling in the City of Fairfax," Erbrecht said. "I also knew the great things that Daniels Run has done with environmental education, foreign language immersion and quality instruction and felt like my skills and interests lined up well with the community of learners there." PHOTOS: Daniels Run Celebrates Cultures

Friday was International Night at Daniels Run, drawing about 500 people.

Daniels Run Elementary School students hosted its annual celebration of cultures Friday night with song, dance and food. PTA parent Peg Weis organized International Night with help from Lucinda Sexton, the school's music and chorus teacher. An estimated 500 parents, friends and community members marked the occasion.  "They did such a great job," said principal Kathy Mullinex. "We are amazed at how many people showed up!" The celebration began earlier in the day while school was still in session. The students participated in a talent show that featured music and dance performances from countries of their culture.  In the evening, parents joined their children and set up booths that showcased food and culture from their home countries.  …
