Citizens Fire Academy Gets Second Term, Registration Open Until Feb. 28

Want to learn more about the City of Fairfax Fire Department? Get first-hand experience putting out a fire? Watch a car cut into bits with the Jaws of Life? Residents will get a chance to do that and more with this year's Citizens Fire Academy. The three-month program introduces Fairfax City residents to those who work to keep their homes and businesses safe. Started in fall 2012, the class includes two- to three-hour classes on a weekly basis. Last year's participants heard the gist of code administration, fumbled through a dark house for a fallen peer, extinguished a fire, and learned to properly fit a tourniquet and perform CPR.  "This program is designed for people who have a genuine desire to learn about the daily life of firefighters…

VIDEO: Firefighters Practice 'Denver Drill'

City of Fairfax Firefighters Joe Charley, Shawn Dunstan, Craig Evans and Walter English demonstrate how to rescue an unconscious firefighter in tight quarters.  The "Denver Drill" is practiced by departments across the nation after a fatal 1992 fire in Denver.  Firefighter Mark Langvardt was trapped behind a narrow window, the floor behind him collapsed. He alerted the team by flashing a light out the window. It took the rescue crew 55 minutes to pull him from the burning building, long after he lost consciousness and died. Fairfax firefighters demonstrate a technique that could be used in rescuing unconscious firefighters from a similar situation. The lesson was part of the first annual Citizens Fire Academy. First-Ever Citizens Fire Graduates Told to Spread the Word

Fairfax residents learn the inner workings of the City of Fairfax Fire Department.

Fairfax residents graduated from the first ever City of Fairfax Citizens Fire Academy Tuesday night. The graduates leave the three-month program with insider knowledge on how the City of Fairfax Fire Department operates and a mission to spread that information to their friends and family. "Our goal is to tell you a little bit about who we are and what we do," Chief Dave Rohr said to academy students at the beginning of the program. "Next time I'd like to see twice as many people here." The academy opened Fairfax's fire department up to city residents.
