Donald Wesley Rice, of Fairfax, passed away this week. Mr. Rice is survived by his wife and daughter. He was an author and a member of the Valley of Toledo Masonic Lodge, according to his obituary posted on the Everly Funeral Home website. His funeral service will take place at a later date. Carol Ann Reeves, 21, of Fairfax, passed away this week. She enjoyed writing and painting, according to her obituary posted on the Everly Funeral Home website. Her service will take place Sunday. County to Fly Flags at Half-Staff for Fairfax Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

First Lt. Robert J. Hess, a Robinson High graduate, died April 23.

  WTOP reports Sunday that Fairfax County will fly its flags at half-staff Monday in honor of a soldier from Fairfax who died in Afghanistan recently. First Lt. Robert J. Hess of Fairfax was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan and will be buried Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, according to the radio station report. In an e-mail update to residents, Braddock District Supervisor John Cook asks residents to honor Hess by flying their personal flags on Monday as well. First Lt. Robert J. Hess, 26, had only just this month been deployed to Pul-E-Elam in Afghanistan to support efforts of Operation Enduring Freedom when he was killed by indirect enemy fire, WUSA 9 reported. Soldier From Fairfax Killed in Afghanistan

First Lt. Robert J. Hess, a Robinson High graduate, died April 23.

  The Department of Defense has reported that First Lt. Robert J. Hess of Fairfax has been killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan. First Lt. Robert J. Hess, 26, had only just this month been deployed to Pul-E-Elam in Afghanistan to support efforts of Operation Enduring Freedom when he was killed by indirect enemy fire, WUSA 9 reported. According to NBC Washington, Hess was an Army Blackhawk pilot. He was highly decorated, and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. The Robinson High School graduate was reportedly a linebacker on the school's state championship-winning football team. He also swam for three years at Robinson, garnering three state championships…

GMU's First Nobel Prize Winner James Buchanan Dies at 93

Buchanan received the Nobel Prize in 1986.

George Mason University's first Nobel laureate died Wednesday at the age of 93. Economist James M. Buchanan taught at University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. He joined GMU's faculty in 1983. Buchanan received the Nobel Prize in Economic Science in 1986. His research asserted that politicans act out of self-interest despite constituent concerns. Civic Leader, Former Mayor John Russell Dies at 89

Services start at 11 a.m. Monday at Everly Funeral Home.

John Russell, the only mayor in the City of Fairfax to serve two separate terms, passed away on Christmas Eve. He was 89. Russell began his first two terms in 1970. He was elected a second time in 1982, only to cut his third term a year early (1982-83) and serve in the Virginia State Senate. He was also appointed to the state education board by former governor George Allen and held terms on the Fairfax City school board and council. Former longtime mayor Rob Lederer said he owes his involvement in City Hall to Russell. Lederer said Russell recruited him during his third term. Eleven Oaks Developer Killed in Hamptons Crash

Schneiderman was vacationing with his family when a truck crashed into his vehicle, killing him and injuring others.

A partner in the development company slated to design Fairfax City's new Eleven Oaks property died in the Hamptons last month. Douglas Foster Schneiderman, a 51-year-old developer from McLean, was killed when an East Hampton man's 1996 Ford pick-up truck hit his Volvo on Route 114, near South Breeze Drive, on July 29 just after 12:30 p.m. Schneiderman and his family were visiting the South Fork on vacation. His wife Elisabeth Schneiderman, also 51, and Rachael Schneiderman, 16, suffered serious injuries in the crash. According to Southampton Hospital records, they were released on Aug. 1, two days before their husband and father was laid to rest in Virginia.
