In budget approval, school board members divided on how best to keep teacher pay competitive moving forward.
After months of debate on how to fairly compensate Fairfax teachers and keep pace with salaries in other jurisdictions , the Fairfax County School board voted for a $2.5 billion budget Thursday that will give employees a 2 percent mid-year market-scale adjustment — making good on a commitment from school board members to provide some sort of compensation relief during this fiscal year. Much of the Fiscal Year 2014 spending plan, which passed on an 8-4 vote, is dedicated to changing demographics and unprecedented student growth — 3,089 students are expected to join the system next year, pushing total enrollment to 184,625. Arria Washington was last seen with her two friends near the Tysons Corner Mall after reportedly fleeing a McLean group home.
Fairfax County police are searching for Arria Washington, 16, of Fairfax, and two other juvenile residents of a group home in McLean who reportedly ran away on Monday. Lucy Caldwell, public information officer for FCPD, told Patch on Friday that Arria and the two other girls, whose names have not been confirmed, were reported missing earlier this week. The three girls were last seen in the area of the Tysons Corner Mall, and were believed to have been heading into the D.C. or Maryland area. Arria is 16 years old, born in November of 1996. She is described as black with a medium complexion, standing at 5-foot-3 and 120 pounds. She has shoulder-length hair, hazel eyes and braces. See picture at right. Microsoft is eyeing a project four University of Virginia (UV) students created after attending the company's Startup Bootcamp in California recently. Vinay Dandekar of Fairfax and three of his fellow UV students were one of 15 college teams Microsoft recently invited to attend its Startup Bootcamp in California's Silicon Valley. After touring several Silicon Valley tech companies and taking in valuable advice on how to successfully create a technology startup, Dandekar's team prepared to enter Microsoft's Imagine Cup challenge. The team walked away with the competition's $5,000 cash prize in the Innovation category for their application, which aims to help physical therapy patients. According to Fairfax City Police, a man was cut with a knife several times in the parking lot of Patriots Cafe last Saturday evening. Police report that, in the early morning hours Sunday, a man called the police to report that he had been assaulted in the parking lot of the restaurant, located at 10376 Fairfax Blvd., a few hours earlier, at approximately 10 p.m. The man said that an unknown male accosted him in the parking lot and cut him with a knife several times. The victim said he fought the suspect off and left the scene in his car. The victim then went to a hospital to get treatment for his injuries, which were not life-threatening.
