Fairfax kids could get more sleep under proposal.
CS April 23, 2014 at 02:15 pm
Instead of trying to be your kids best friend, get them to bed earlier! I go to bed at around 930pmRead More when I can so that I can get enough sleep to wake up at 530am to get to work by 7am! That's life! Not sure how this helps them prepare for real life where employers don't care about how much sleep you got the night before! This argument is really absurd and a waste of time.
Lisa Ross April 23, 2014 at 04:11 pm
Convict and CS, you obviously think most parents are neglectful. They are not. And my teens are inRead More bed at 9 pm every night with no electronics. But in order to get 9 hours of sleep and still wake at 5:30 am, they would have to be in bed AND asleep at 8:30 pm. NO teen can fall asleep that early -or even at 9 or 9:30 pm. Teen biology is DIFFERENT than adult and child biology -THAT is the issue. Their melatonin does not turn on till about 10 or 11 pm and they are not alert until about 8 -9 am. Just ask any HS teacher about their first period class. That is why this is a problem -not because parents just let their teens stay up till all hour. Adults can also choose where to live and which jobs to take. So for example, I would never take a job that starts at 7 am. But FCPS kids have no choice when they have to get up and research shows they sleep is every bit as important as food for physical and mental health. For teens, it's also even more important than for adults like you two since teens are still growing. Besides the period between 0 -2 years of age, I bet the teen years are the biggest growth period for body and brain development. This issue matters.

Thank you for your input, Lisa. I raised my kids and also was a kid myself. I understand how puttingRead More kids to bed earlier allows them more sleep. Not sure our biological makeup changed much since I was a kid or my children were going to school. As far as kids not being able to fall asleep? My kids had no problem because they led active lives during the day. Sleep was welcomed by bedtime. Also, you would have to be naïve to believe that many parents give their child a reasonable bedtime or a bedtime at all for that matter. I'm quite sure many parents have no idea how late their kids stay up. You are obviously an exception. It's also silly to think that kids are not going to stay up later because of this. So, all of this effort will be for naught. It hasn't impaired the growth and learning of kids thus far. Not sure I've met anyone who has been a failure because their school start at 720 instead of 820. As far as my job being a choice? Wow! Would be nice to have the luxury of choice when it comes to decent employment. I envy you for that!
Summer will wait one more day.
D. Brown April 12, 2014 at 07:28 am
Why bother? The books and supplies will be packed away. It is just a waste of people's time.
Rolling Thunder 2013 April 12, 2014 at 12:14 pm
@D. Brown. I thoroughly agree. Waste of time and money.
afsheri April 12, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Agree - what is the point? More money spent on opening for a few hours for zero productivity. AddRead More some Saturdays to the schedule between now and then.
School Delay Decision from Fairfax County Schools. Patch File.
The Convict March 19, 2014 at 04:02 am
Yes, I'm sure our lagging performance against other countries can rightly be attributed toRead More weather-related, school opening delays. I don't know about your kids, but mine, instead of walking headlong into traffic in order to get to the bus stop because of a lack of properly cleared sidewalks, went to the YMCA instead. So, while your kid was out there toughening up by standing in the cold, the Delinquents were toughening up in the gym so that they can literally kick the world's ass.
Mike March 20, 2014 at 04:23 pm
Our lagging performance has everything to do with the idiots running Henrdon Elementary. Lots of forRead More sale signs going up this spring as a result! Nice job HE! I see Brenda Wichman was nice enough to perpetuate the whine about the poor kiddies having to stand and walk on snow at the bus stop or on their way to school! OH THE HORROR! Man some parents are freakin...well, you know.

I see you like kids.....

I just got an email from Fairfax County School stating that they were closed tomorrow.

I just want to know how are this kids getting kill? Are they going to school or out of school? ItRead More just breaks my heart when I hear this. May God give the families the strength and Peace.

Two more students at a local high school have died. This is so sad and horrible. It is time forRead More our schools, communities and churches to talk about this.
There's a way around the calendar crunch for some snow days: a state waiver. Patch file photo.
Cee IheartNez Carter February 17, 2014 at 11:47 am
Since they are not going to change the date of regularly scheduled testing I don't think that makingRead More up the days do anything good for the students. Unless these days can be made up in advance of the test (sol, ect) so my vote it to not extend school!
MomtoB February 18, 2014 at 03:09 pm
Most schools around the world have classes year round. We have 180 days and then aren't even goingRead More to make up the ten missed days. It's ridiculous. These kids need to be in school. Yes make up the days, go to a longer school year. Make Monday's full day, take away teacher work days and whatever else it takes. There were talks about starting before Labor Day every year - why didn't that take place? Our kids are missing out on education and they need to be in school more to make up for it.
Meg February 19, 2014 at 03:43 pm
Maybe schools should have thought of this before classes were cancelled. There's no reason kidsRead More can't go to school because of the threat of snow. And "storms" where we get 2 inches and classes cancelled are JOKE. And I'm sorry when temps are in the low 20's with windchills in the teens or single digits - that's what layers are for... wear winter clothing and dress for the weather. I have absolutely no sympathy for the kids needing to be in school longer.

Teachers Dressing Casual For a Raise in Fairfax County
Anderson February 11, 2014 at 10:22 am
Difficult to justify pay increases when FCPS continues to receive 30+ highly qualified applicantsRead More for each teaching position advertised, and shuffles poor performers rather than removing them. I hope the teachers taking advantage of dress down days are making contributions to charity like we do for dress down days in our office. Posting the total amount collected on adressingdown.com would give meaning to their efforts.
Jennifer Rosso Jain February 11, 2014 at 03:21 pm
Annual pay is not the only financial compensation. If people added paid time of with other benefitsRead More and added that to the salary one makes much more. Higher take home pay is always nice but other benefits are often over looked.
Bambie February 17, 2014 at 11:03 am
Anderson, a job opening might get 30+ applicants but maybe only one or two are "highlyRead More qualified" Jennifer what are the added compensations and benefits teachers get? TM, I support cutting senor services to pay teachers higher, that will keep your taxes nice and low. Being a teacher is hard, between spending your own money on classroom supplies the county does not have money to buy, having overcrowded classrooms with up to 30 students in outdated facilities, having students who come to school underdressed, unfed, unwashed, and undervalued; having to teach students who don't care if they pass the tests. After looking at this is deeply and thoroughly I think we should cut teachers pay, they should enjoy the privilege we give them of teaching our nasty little ba$tard$ of children.
Catholic School Controversy: Paul VI Parents Petition to Halt Move to Loudoun. Screencapture
Sally Sense February 6, 2014 at 08:24 pm
The campaign "Keep PVI in Fairfax" is directed to the Diocese of Arlington Office ofRead More Catholic Schools who made the decision and announcement to move to Loudoun County. We encourage conversation with the school leaders and community leaders as well in the decision making process.
Sally Sense February 8, 2014 at 06:54 pm
The Keep PVI in Fairfax community would like the Diocese of Arlington to answer some questionsRead More regarding the planned move. For example: If space is an issue with the current enrollment, why is building a second school in Loudoun County not an option? What would it take to renovate the current location to meet future needs? What concessions would the city need to make so that you will consider staying in Fairfax City? Will you consider dialog with the families effected by this planned move before proceeding or is this a done deal? As far as we are aware, all communication has been ignored.
