Is the Virginia jobless rate calculated the same as the national jobless rate? I thought if lessRead More people are looking for work, usually the jobless rate comes down.
Bruce Alter July 19, 2014 at 08:07 am
Patrick J is correct. If a person stops looking for work s/he is NOT counted in the jobless rate.Read More The rate is a measurement of people who ARE looking for work, but who cannot get it.
Hawa Coulibaly July 19, 2014 at 11:01 am
I wonder if the jobless rate includes people who are sabotaged even when they get great evaluationsRead More as volunteers...

Boy are the Middle eastern/ Asian owned 7-11s going to hate this week. To me over the past decade itRead More seems like only the European, white or black owned 7-11s greet you with a smile when there are freebies (customer appreciation days). Middle easterner's/ and Asian's hate the freebies... pay attention and watch them this week when you stop in for your freebies.

Funny how I, in spite of my obviously extreme whiteness, have never experienced this problem. MaybeRead More there's something you're doing subconsciously when you walk in? Anyone walking in with a look of apprehension and nervousness, "watching them," is of course going to meet with a different welcome than someone who walks in with a friendly smile.

Nespresso's machines make nearly instant espresso/lattes that taste just like Starbucks. HighRead More inital cost though (around $200)

This is so Starbucks can pay off those student loans that these kids got an education and nowRead More whining about paying back.
Amtrak plans to launch high-speed Wi-Fi service that will allow streaming media and downloading large files. Credit: File|Patch

Amtrak should be doing this along the Auto train route to Florida. Having been on the Acela, theyRead More already have wifi. But on the Auto Train -- an overnight experience -- there is no wifi. This would reduce traffic along the I-95 corridor going south and make Amtrak -- dare I say it -- reasonable value if not profitable...
ssbun June 13, 2014 at 08:42 am
The auto train has WiFi but only in the lounge car. I traveled on the auto train last month.

Although a move may be an imposition to their current employees, McCormick will lower their taxesRead More (and their employees taxes) if they move outside of Maryland to either VA, PA or DE.

Although it may be an imposition, to current employees, McCormick will lower their taxes (and theirRead More employees' taxes) if they relocate outside of MD to either, VA, PA or DE. Lets hope they select NOVA.

Hopefully when they reopen either the prices are more at Diner levels (unlike the Silver Diner whereRead More you pay a premium for a diner-like experience) or their food is better. Obviously both would be the best combination.

Most businesses simply do not want the liability of what can happen if any kind of gun violenceRead More breaks out in their place of business. It isn't exactly the kind of publicity they seek. Having your business robbed is bad enough. Having someone, who is not the perpetrator of a crime shot or killed in your place of business isn't something you want advertised. I can only imagine people saying, hey let's go down to Red Robbin where that guy/girl/kid got killed & have lunch. The problem with guns is they are tools with one purpose. Good things rarely happen when they are used among the general public. Public safety is a balancing act that requires factoring in probabilities & the probability of something going wrong increases with guns added to any scenario that isn't target practice, gun club activity, hunting or war.

Let's say for the sake of argument that an armed robber comes into some store or whatever, getsRead More confronted by one our "armed heroes protecting the constitution" and a gun battle breaks out. Lets just say that during the gun battle the "hero of the constitution" manages to accidentally kill 3 people in the crossfire. Is our "armed hero of the constitution" guilty of murder? Manslaughter? Anything? What do we say to the relatives of those who "accidentally" got killed? "Tisk, Tisk, Tisk....They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time." This is stupid. Do we all need to start wearing head to toe body armor now just to protect the rights of some fanatic gun nuts and radical right wing extremists? Do gun manufacturers REALLY need money that badly?

3 dead in shooting at Vegas restaurant, Walmart Another shooting where people were ambushed andRead More perhaps the shooters stopped by someone legally carrying a weapon. Two of those critically wounded were police officers. The two shooters killed themselves. Of course this is one of those shootings that liberals say they never hear of happening. A needed step into the 21st century and out of the 1950s. With the simultaneous redevelopment of theRead More apartments at Layton Hall and Oak Knoll, there is going to be a shortage of this type of housing. No one seems to care where the long time residents of these current apartment communities are going to end up. Hopefully the long term redevelopment plans include a strategy for pedestrians, bicycles and reliable public transportation that includes access to the Vienna Metro Station. The only way to get people out of their cars is to offer a viable alternative.
Lisa Whetzel June 4, 2014 at 06:53 am
This is a smart investment for the city. Glad it was approved. I would like to see mixed-useRead More redevelopment of Willard Way Shopping Center too. Upgrade that lousy Safeway or get rid of it! Create more pedestrian living. Look at Fairfax Corners or Mosaic as examples of success. We need our own version in downtown Fairfax City and Fairfax Circle mixed-use redevelopment is a smart start.
