This Week: 'The Capitol Steps' Comes to Fairfax, 'Our Parks Our Future' Meeting, Children's Book Author Signing and More

Columbus Day Children's Book Signing: Not sure what to do with the kids with no school on Monday? Do your kids love books? Author Callista Gingrich will be signing copies of her book Yankee Doodle Dandee at the Barnes & Noble bookstore at Fair Lakes, 12193 Fair Lakes Promenade Dr. in Fairfax, on Monday at 1 p.m. The book features the popular character Ellis the Elephant as she learns about the American Revolution. As a special guest Mr. Gingrich will also be signing "God in America", "A Nation Like No Other" and other titles. books must be purchased in the store on the day of event to be signed. 

Moms Club of Fairfax West MeetingAre you a stay-at-home mom of a young one who'd like to meet other local moms for support, playdates, and more? If you live in one of the 22030, 22031, 22032 and 22033 zip codes, this group is for you, and they are welcoming new members. Meet at the Kings Park Library, 9000 Burke Lake Road, this Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. 

City of Fairfax 'Our Parks, Our Future' Meeting: Are you concerned about the future of the City of Fairfax parks? Have you attended one of the previous stakeholder or community input meetings, and want to know the outcome? After 22 stakeholder meetings, four public workshops, and thousands of community surveys, the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department is ready to present its final report on all of the findings and input, and discuss the future vision, mission, and goals for the City's parks, recreation, trails, open space, cultural arts and events. This Thursday, 7 p.m., in Old Town Hall, 3999 University Dr. in Fairfax City.

Fairfax High School Dance Clinic and Performance for K-8: Do you have a child in kindergarten through eighth grade who'd love to be able to dance like the talented students on Fairfax High's "Rebel Dancers" team? This Friday, Oct. 18, the FHS Rebel Dancers welcomes kids in K-8 to a two-and-a-half-hour dance clinic, after which they will get to perform alongside the Rebel Dancers during a Fairfax High football game halftime show! Register now through Oct. 17 for $50, or register the day of the clinic (if there are spots remaining) for $60. Registration includes a Rebel Dancers t-shirt and admission to the football game. VolunteerFest 'Intake Day' For Families in Need: This Saturday, Oct. 19, Our Daily Bread of Fairfax City will be registering Fairfax County residents in need to receive assistance through its Holiday Program. Volunteers are needed to help sign up families in need - especially volunteers bilingual in Spanish. This Saturday, Oct. 19, 8:30 a.m. Click here to learn more or to sign up to volunteer.

Fairfax High School's 'The Capitol Steps': Since 1981, The Capitol Steps have been delighting audiences (and horrifying politicians) with their special brand of musical political satire. This traveling troupe put the "MOCK" in democracy. This year's theme is "Fiscal Shades of Gray." Funds raised through ticket sales support the Fairfax High School Class of 2014 All-Night Graduation Party, a chaperoned, fun-filled, but drug- and alcohol-free graduation celebration.
