'Tis the Season to Volunteer!

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” For most people, holiday time is one of the best times of the year. It is a time marked by cheer, gifts, huge feasts, and quality time spent with loved ones. Most of all, the holidays are a time of goodwill. During the holidays, we are often reminded that “it is more blessed to give, than to receive.”  This holiday season you may be inspired to give back to others through volunteering. However, before you do, here are some things to consider:

·         Get started NOW! With the huge jolt in volunteering around the holidays, it’s almost guaranteed that you are not the only one looking for volunteer opportunities. There are lots of opportunities for holiday volunteering out there but you need to get a head start to secure a spot.

·         Be flexible. Unfortunately, there is not enough room for everyone to participate in the same volunteer projects. Be open to the idea that the project you would like to take part in may already be filled. Try something new, you just may like it!

·         Donations are always welcome. Want to volunteer but can’t fit it into your busy holiday schedule? Donations are a great way to give back and are greatly needed and appreciated by most nonprofits. There are lots of things that you can donate: non-perishable food items, toys, winter clothing (coats, boots, hats, scarves, etc.), and don’t forget monetary donations even if it’s just spare change. Every little bit helps!

·         Make volunteering a year-round affair! Don’t wait until the holidays to volunteer. Nonprofits need the services and time that volunteers offer all year round. Most nonprofits experience an overabundance of holiday volunteers, which means turning away volunteers during the holiday season.

There are many ways to give back this holiday season, whether it’s serving a Thanksgiving meal, providing someone with a warm winter coat, or just donating your spare change. Be creative and most of all have fun!
