U.S. Taekwondo College Celebrates 40th Anniversary

U.S. Taekwondo College (USTC) celebrates its 40th anniversary since it first opened doors in 1972.

U.S. Taekwondo College (USTC) celebrates its 40th anniversary since it first opened doors in 1972.  Grandmaster Myung Hak Kang immigrated from Seoul, Korea and established the first U.S. Taekwondo College in Arlington.  Today, USTC boasts over 10 locations, including Fairfax, Chantilly and Arlington.

U.S. Taekwondo College teaches the Korean martial art of Taekwondo to children, teens, adults and families.  Loosely translated, Tae means foot or kick, Kwon means hand or punch and Do means the art or way. Thus, Taekwondo is the art of kicking and punching.

Grandmaster Kang began Taekwondo at a very young age and little did he know then that it would become a strong passion for the rest of his life. He immigrated to the States in November 1972 and quickly realized the potential that teaching Taekwondo had in the States.

“I didn’t know how popular Taekwondo would be in a foreign country. I wanted to share a passion of mine and hoped the fitness and discipline aspect would catch on” says Grandmaster Kang.

In 40 years, U.S. Taekwondo College has expanded to over 10 locations, mainly in the Northern Virginia region. It started with its first location on the first floor in the same building as the Arlington Cinema N Drafthouse. With hard carpet floors and minimal décor, the humble Taekwondo studio had its start. With a consistent program, effective masters and instructors and a few loyal students, U.S. Taekwondo College is now the successful school that it is today.

Grandmaster Kang says, “Without my students, many of whom are like family, U.S. Taekwondo College would not be where it is today. I must share my success with my students. I did not do this alone.”

U.S. Taekwondo College (USTC) is a chain of Taekwondo schools, mainly in the Northern Virginia area. USTC offers high-caliber Taekwondo programs to children, teens, adults and families.
