Storm, Flooding Alert for Northern Virginia

Heavy rain may impact afternoon commute.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch and a flash flood watch for most of northern Virginia.

The severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 p.m. for areas that include Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, as well as Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Manassas and Manassas Park.

The flash flood watch is in effect until 10 p.m. for area that include Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria; Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties; Manassas and Manassas Park.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening across the area, with rainfall rates at more than 2 inches per hour possible, according to the NWS.

After a string of afternoon storms in recent days, the NWS warns that, "only one or two inches of additional rainfall will be needed in targeted areas to produce flash flooding."
