Woodson Steals Annandale's Homecoming Victory

The Cavaliers win 14-7.

Two weeks after Woodson’s homecoming was , the Cavaliers played the villain on Friday night by defeating the Annandale Atoms on their homecoming 14 – 7.  The win is the second in a row for Woodson, following last week’s 14 – 13 victory in Alexandria over T.C. Williams.

As the final score would indicate, Friday’s game against the Atoms was a defensive contest throughout, as both teams struggled to complete scoring drives.   Woodson’s offense failed to muster many yards or first downs, but the Cavaliers pulled off two big plays helping generate the scores needed to win.

Annandale jumped out to an early 7 – 0 first quarter lead on Tony Hysjulien's touchdown run.  But Woodson answered at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter when Cavs’ quarterback Stephen Tapp connected with Bryce Mauro on slant pattern over the middle.  Mauro hauled in the pass and outran Atom defenders into the end zone for the 46-yard score.  Sam Heaney added the extra point for Woodson to tie the game 7 - 7.

After the score Woodson’s offense went dormant until midway through the fourth quarter when Jonathan Stokes broke free on a 54-yard run down the Atoms’ two-yard line.  Stokes scored on a short run two plays later, and Heaney’s extra point put the Cavs ahead to stay 14 – 7 with 6:17 left in the game.

Although the Atoms moved the ball well in the middle of the field for most of the game, the Cavaliers’ defense managed to hold Annandale scoreless after the Atoms’ opening series.  With the lead in jeopardy Woodson came up with two big defensive stops late in the fourth quarter when the Atoms were threatening to tie the game.  Senior defensive back Jack Wecker’s two interceptions deep in Woodson territory stymied Annandale’s final drives to seal the win for the Cavaliers.
