Woodson Soccer Claims First Win of Season

They beat Fairfax 2-1.

Fairfax High School's boys soccer team travelled up the road to Woodson High School Friday, where both teams hoped to claim their first win of a young season. The Rebs didn't get the outcome they had hoped for. Woodson's Cavaliers took advantage of  numerous chances, defeating the Rebels 2-1.

“We got a lot of chances early, one resulting in the penalty kick," said Woodson coach John McAuley.  "[Fairfax] battled through in the second half against us and got a goal there to tighten things up. In the last 10 to 15 minutes, we kind of settled back down and were able to finish the game."

Woodson sophomore midfielder Chris Fanet got in the scorebook first after a successful penalty kick attempt. Senior Sam Elliot scored a left-footed blast aimed beautifully into the upper right corner of the goal.

Fairfax came out aggressive in the second half, keeping Woodson on their side of the field. The Rebs cut the Cavs’ lead in half, scoring with just over 17 minutes remaining in the second. However, Woodson adjusted defensively, and preserved their lead.

“It takes a little while for the team to find their identity and work together, but I think we did a much better job of that in the second half than we did in the first half tonight,” said Fairfax coach Kelly Lusk. “But like I told them after the game, you have to do that for two halves to expect to a better result. We have to put two halves together now.”

The Rebels' next chance will come on Tuesday on the road against Madison High. Woodson will look for its second win on Friday at home against Stone Bridge.
