Wolverines Defeat Woodson 2-1

Woodson was scoreless until a last minute goal by Sean Powell.

A late game goal that trickled past the West Potomac goalie wasn’t enough for the Cavaliers to overcome a 2-1 loss to the Wolverines Wednesday night at Woodson High School.

The Wolverines scored two goals in the first half and dominated most of the game, holding Woodson scoreless until senior forward Sean Powell scored late in the game. West Potomac kept the ball near Woodson’s goal for most of the first and second half, rarely allowing the Cavaliers to get up field freely for shots on goal.

“They brought a field player into the goal who had an outstanding game against us,” said Woodson head coach John McCauley after the game. “He had a couple of really good saves, one in the first half that was an excellent save on a nice take by our midfielder Chris Fennet, that might’ve changed the game a little bit. They played with a lot of energy throughout the game.”

Freshman Billy Metzler finished with one assist and senior goalie Adam Gordon finished the game with seven saves for Woodson. The Cavs were coming off a 4-0 victory over Lee after snapping a four game losing skid during the month of April.

Sophomore midfielder displayed good footwork and control of the ball against swarms of defenders as he has all year, but the Wolverines defense made it tough on him and his teammates all night.

“Sometimes we look to take the extra pass, and not take the shot early, and then the shot is not there,” said McCauley. “We’ve got to try to get dangerous a little earlier.”

The defeat drops Woodson to 3-7-2 overall on the season and they remain in fifth place in the Patriot District behind their likely first round playoff opponent, South County High School.

Cavaliers travel next to Edison High School for their final regular season game on May 12.
