Timeline: Larranaga Rules Mason Nation

GMU's Final Four coach leaves for Miami.

Head coach Jim Larranaga's 14th season with the Patriots will be his last as he announced his intent today to leave Mason for Miami.

Larranaga, who had signed on to stay at Mason through the 2015-2016 season, will become the 12th head coach of the University of Miami men's basketball program. 

Most known for leading the Patriots to the NCAA semifinals in 2006, he leaves George Mason University with a 273-164 (.625) green and gold record. Here's a quick look at the coach's most memorable moments in Fairfax:

1977: Larranaga coaches for American International College.

1979: He moves on to become an assistant coach at the University of Virginia.

1986: Bowling Green signs Larranaga on as head coach.

1997: Larranaga starts as head coach of the George Mason University men's basketball team. [what was the team's record then?] 

1999: The Patriots grab the CAA Championship title by tying with James Madison for first place and earning the top seed in the conference. 

2001: Larranaga sees his second NCAA appearance with the Patriots after another CAA Championship win. The team leads the CAA in scores per game, was second in scoring margin, first in steals and so on. 

2003: The Patriots hit a 7-2 non-conference record and broke the Mason record for 23 wins in a season. The team leads the league with 8.52 steals per game. They are second overall and 16th in scoring defense national rankings. 

2005: His 131st win on Jan. 22 (against James Madison) makes him the Patriots all-time leader in men's basketball victories.

2006: The year of the green and gold. Mason gets its moment in national sports fame as the Patriots beat Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut (the No. 1 seed) to try for a Final Four win. Even though they are defeated by Florida (who grabs the national championship), the Patriots' Cinderella run solidifies the university's place in sports fame. Enrollment applications skyrocket and suddenly the state, Northern Virginia and even Fairfax realizes they have a university in their midst. The Patriots are the first CAA team to hit the NCAA semifinals. Larranaga receives the Clair Bee Coach of the Year Award.

2008: Another CAA Championship win. Larranaga marks his 400th career win with a February victory over Delaware.

2009: Larranaga sees his team to a first-round NCAA defeat against the Fighting Irish in Denver.

2010: , this time against Northeastern. They go on to their sixth NCAA appearance, beating  Villanova in the first round and falling to No. 1 seed Ohio State. The Patriots take the Colonial Athletic Association title, tying the most league wins in the annals of the CAA. They break Mason's record for winning streak by winning 16 in a row. Larranaga is named the CAA Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. And last, but not least, the team ties the Final Four team (and GMU record) for the number of victories.
