Rebs Take Third Liberty District Title in a Row

Fairfax field hockey suffered a few minor injuries but stayed on the field.

UPDATE (11:52 a.m.): Correction made to number of athletes who kept playing after being injured.

Fairfax High School's varsity field hockey team kept their winning streak alive with a hard-fought 1-0 district final win against McLean.

The Rebels won their third Liberty District Final in a row Friday night at Madison High School. They didn't escape unscathed, however. Tiffany Balbuena suffered a cut to the chin, Shannon Parker, who assisted the game's only goal, dislocated her thumb, and Cassidy Tammaro, who scored, broke her hand.

Two of the players "were patched up by the trainer and were able to go back in," said field hockey fan and Fairfax resident Laura Zelenack.

Tammaro left for the hospital, missing out on the team's revelry and her 18th birthday celebration.

The players were honored during halftime at Friday's Fairfax football game.

In three seasons, the Rebels amassed an impressive 45-plus wins and appeared in the 2009 Northern Region Tournament semifinals, where they suffered a tough one-point loss to South County.

They move on to the first round of regionals on Tuesday.
