Rebs Dominate Herndon Field Hockey Tournament

Fairfax is 10-0 on the season.

The Fairfax Rebels Field Hockey team dominated the field en route to the Herndon Invitational Tournament title and a 10-0 season record. The Rebels outscored their opponents 17-0 during the tournament by forcing play into the opponents zone.

Rebels midfield, led by senior captain Sam Zelenack, senior Amanda Blackwell and junior Sara Allen, were able to thwart opponents attacks before they could get into the Fairfax circle and maintain possession in their opponent's zone.

Fairfax opened the tournament with a 5-0 win against the Wolverines of West Potomac High School. Senior captain Shannon Cosgrove scored 2 goals, including one on a penalty stroke, to open the scoring. Junior midfielder Sara Allen scored a goal and assisted two others. Senior midfielder Amanda Blackwell added a goal and an assist. Sophomore forward Charlotte Duke rounded out the scoring and senior midfielder Sam Zelenack added an assist.

In Friday night's second game, the Rebels defeated the Yorktown Patriots by a score of 4-0. Senior midfielder Amanda Blackwell got the Rebels started in the first half by setting up sophomore midfielder Cori Black on her first varsity goal, then Shannon Cosgrove to take a 2-0 lead. The Rebels extended the lead to 3-0 when junior forward Emily Freeman scored on an assist from Sara Allen. Sophmore midfielder Trisha Le closed out the scoring on a feed from Shannon Cosgrove.

The Rebels secured a spot in the tournament final with a 4-0 win Saturday morning over the Wakefield Warriors. Shannon Cosgrove began the scoring with two first-half goals, the second on the first varsity assist of sophomore Katie Buchen. The final two goals of the game, both assisted by junior midfielder Jessica Bachelder, were scored by Sara Allen and senior midfielder Nikki Strickland.

Fairfax secured the tournament championship with a 4-0 victory over the tournament host Herndon Hornets. The first half was a very tight back and forth battle of attacks and counter attacks. The Rebels would break through just once in the first half against the Hornet defense when Shannon Cosgrove scored off a pass from Emily Freeman. The Rebels turned the tide in the second half, constantly pressuring the Herndon goal. It was Emily Freeman breaking through again with two goals in the second half, once on a pass from Sara Allen and again on a pass from Sam Zelenack. The Rebels' final score came when sophomore Katie Buchen scored her first varsity goal on a pass from Shannon Cosgrove.

In addition to winning the championship, senior captains Sam Zelenack and Shannon Cosgrove and junior forward Emily Freeman were honored as members of the All Tournament Team. Shannon Cosgrove was also awarded the Tournament MVP.

The Rebels (10-0) will return to Liberty District play on Wednesday night when they travel to Madison High School to take on the Warhawks (3-6).
