Fairfax Softball Remains Winless With Stone Bridge Defeat

The Rebels scored several runs in the final inning but it wasn't enough to overcome the tough visiting team.

The Fairfax Rebels suffered a tough 16-5 loss on a frigid Friday night at home against Stone Bridge High School.

“It was a tough game, but the girls are getting better with each game,” head coach Corey Stokes said after the game. “We have a great group of girls, they play hard all five innings and that’s more than we can ask for.”

Sophomore Kelly McDaniel pitched all five innings for Stone Bridge showing off her stellar arm strength.

Freshman Rebecca Hall provided the lone spark for the Rebels with her solo home run that sailed over the right outfield wall in the bottom of the third inning.

The Bulldogs took an 11-2 lead off of an RBI double by junior infielder Lindsey Bittle in the top of the fourth inning to largely put the game out of reach.

But Fairfax never gave up despite the seemingly insurmountable lead. During the bottom of the fifth inning it seemed as if they might just pull off a miracle comeback victory after an RBI single by Kara Ladd followed by an RBI double by catcher Farren Tashjian made the score 16-5.  A wild throw by the first baseman to third allowed the second run to be scored by Katherine Faunce.

Stone Bridge’s pitching combined with some missed fly ball catches in the outfield proved to be too much to overcome for the Rebels.

Senior Kevyn Richmond showed great effort at both the short stop and third base position for the Rebels, making tough catches and snagging foul balls.

“Stone Bridge has great hitters one through nine, and they had a great pitching effort today,” Stokes said after the game. “We scored four runs in the last inning though so that shows that we never give up. We have a tough district especially with McLean being the defending state champions, I think the Liberty is the most competitive district out there right now.”

It won’t get any easier for the Rebels on Tuesday when they travel to defending state champion McLean High School looking for their first victory of the year.
