Fairfax Baseball Falls to West Springfield

Rebels take early lead off ace Simko, but Spartans come back late

The West Springfield Spartans edged Fairfax for a tough 4-3 victory to open their season Friday night. Senior ace Michael Simko pitched seven complete innings for the Spartans giving up a total of four hits on the night.

Catcher David Pyon took a high fastball to the back of his head in the top of the fourth inning and was forced to leave the game. He appeared shaken up, but should recover and be ready for action within the next few games.

“It’s a good win, we didn’t play very well, but I’m not taking anything away from Fairfax they played a good ballgame,” Spartans Coach John James said after the win. “Winning a tight game early in the season is probably going to be good for us in the long run.”

Michael Simko threw a complete game for the Spartans, allowing just four hits.

Fairfax infielder Sean Ranson put the Rebels on the scoreboard early with a home run in the bottom of the first. The Rebels then took control of the game in the third inning after a low throw to Spartans first baseman Wes Stonelake rolled into their dugout and allowed another score for Fairfax.

Stonelake got that run back plus one more in the fourth with a two-run single off Rebels starting pitcher Joseph Vanderplas. At that point the Rebels brought in Kyle Wash to relieve Vanderplas, and he proceeded to surrender an RBI double to West Springfield catcher Donny Haeuptle giving the Spartans their fourth and decisive run of the game.

“We did a really good job of competing tonight. It wasn’t pretty but they got it done,” James said.

The Spartans face the Robinson Rams at 2:30 at Robinson High School with senior J.T. Williams pitching while Fairfax travels to Woodson to face the Cavaliers at noon
