Edison Girls Defeat Fairfax in First Round of Region Tourney

Great season for Rebels comes to an end

Senior guard Kierra Graham led the Edison Eagles to a 65-48 victory against the visiting Fairfax Rebels Monday night in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament.

Helping her team to a 10-0 scoring run in the first quarter, Graham scored for 22 points on the night.

The Rebels, led by senior Meredith Mesaris with 19 points, seemed worn out by the Eagles’ strong defense.

Despite Graham’s strong offensive performance, defense was the name of the Eagles’ game as they sent the Rebels into panic mode from the start.

“Our defense was solid tonight,” said Edison coach Dianne Lewis after the game. “The girls responded well to the full-court press.”

As tired as they may have appeared, the Rebels kept the game close, coming within three points early in the second half while implementing a full-court press of their own.

The Edison Eagles will play at West Springfield Wednesday night at 7:30.

“It will be a tough game,” said a smiling Lewis. “We will play them the best we can.”
