Mason Move-In Could Mean Traffic Delays

Delays could be worse this year because of Roanoke River Road construction.

This week about 5,000 students will move into the Fairfax campus dormitories. Expect heavy traffic around the campus' Braddock and Route 123 entrances.

Mason officials say this week's "main move-in days" will be Thursday and Saturday. Here's what you need to know:

  • Thursday: This is the move-in day for freshmen. Expect about 2,000 students with their friends and families between 8 a.m and 4 p.m.
  • Saturday: This is the move-in day for upper class students. Expect about 3,000 students with their friends and families between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Classes begin on Monday.

University events are notorious for jamming traffic on Braddock Road and Route 123.

This year's move-in will have to deal with construction at one of Mason's main entrances across from University Mall. The Braddock-Roanoke River Road entrance will be partially open to traffic during the day to allow one lane of vehicles turning into the campus and another lane for those turning onto Braddock. It will close completely at night.

Braddock-Roanoke construction is scheduled to finish in December.
