GMU School of Music Grand Piano Celebration

Concert proceeds support student scholarships and programs through the Dr. Linda Apple Monson Music Endowment Fund.

George Mason University’s School of Music presents “A Grand Piano Celebration” at the  on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The program will feature Linda Apple Monson performing a new solo piano work by Mason faculty composer Glenn Smith. The composition is written for and dedicated to Monson.

Recently named a Distinguished Service Professor, Monson is an International Steinway Artist, as well as the associate director of the School of Music and director of Keyboard Studies.

Monson will also collaborate in performance with several faculty colleagues from the School of Music, including duo-piano works by Shostakovich and Khachaturian with concert pianist Anna Balakerskaia; works by Wolf, Strauss and Puccini with coloratura soprano Lisa Berger; and compositions by Handel and Marvin with trumpet virtuoso Dennis Edelbrock.

The program will also showcase several School of Music student pianists, who are recipients of scholarship support. They will perform works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, Gershwin and Ginastera.

Monson was recently awarded the “George Mason University 2012 Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year” at the Alumni Association annual Celebration of Distinction Awards Ceremony. She has been a professor in Mason’s School of Music since 1999. She also serves as director of music at Springfield United Methodist Church.

Tickets for “A Grand Piano Celebration” are $20 general admission, $15 for seniors, $5 for students in grades K-12 and non-Mason students, and free to Mason students with a valid Mason ID.
