GMU Makes Forbes' List of Top Colleges in Nation

In total, 22 Virginia colleges and universities made the list.

Five Virginia colleges, including Fairfax's own George Mason University, recently made Forbes' Top Colleges list.

The Virginia schools and their rankings in the Top 100 on the list are:

#21: Washington and Lee University

On the top 200 are Virginia TechJames Madison UniversityHampden-Sydney College and George Mason University.

California's Stanford University topped the list.

Forbes said it partnered with the Washington, D.C.-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity to make the rankings based more on "output" - or, what students get out of college - rather than "input," such as how hard it is to get into the college.
The schools were ranked in five categories - student satisfaction, post-graduate success, student debt, graduation rate, and nationally competitive awards. Read more about the ranking criteria here.
