As you know, there was a shooting at a high school in Chardon, Ohio, earlier this week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and school community who suffered this tragedy. A FCPS colleague who I keep in contact with told me that one of his friends teaches at the middle school there. The teacher in Ohio emailed this message to my colleague:

“If there is a lesson to take from this nightmare that you could share with your staffs, it is that the trainings, drills, etc WORKED. We all sometimes roll our eyes and go through the motions when it comes time to lockdown drills. Yesterday, I saw that those drills brought my students a clear understanding of what they should do and how they should act. This familiarity brought them a little bit of ‘the known’ at a time when ‘the unknown’ was everywhere.”

Please remind your students of the importance of the drills we practice and the steps they can take to make themselves and our school as safe as possible.

You can talk about this and other issues at the Principal's Coffee open forum on Friday. It runs from 7:30-8:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria.
