Fairfax High Wind Ensemble Gets Prestigious Gig
The school's Wind Ensemble was one of only three to four schools chosen each year to participate in this annual performance.
For the first time in Fairfax High School history, the school's Wind Ensemble was selected to perform at the 2013 Virginia Music Educators' Association convention.
Each year, only three to four ensembles from across the entire commonwealth are selected to perform for the VMEA, a highly coveted gig. In order to be selected, a band submits a recording in May and it is evaluated against all other entries, said Maureen Keck, assistant principal.
Last week on Nov. 21, the wind ensemble traveled to Hot Springs to perform a 45-minute show in front of most of Virginia's music educators.
"It is a wonderful opportunity for the exposure of our program, and the rigor of putting that much music together so early in the year—and during marching band season!—has truly helped push our musicianship and talents to the next level," music educators from Fairfax High School said.
"The music our wind ensemble prepared for VMEA focused mainly on newer music, with varying difficulties, so that they could share a variety of great music with the directors in attendance," the teachers said. "Our Wind Ensemble students have definitely risen to the challenge and presented a musically rewarding experience for all."
