Fairfax Field Hockey Looking for Three-Peat

Zelenack and strong midfield to lead Rebels.

After starting off the season with a 2-1 win over Washington-Lee that went to penalty strokes earlier this week, the Field Hockey team is definitely ready for the Fall 2011 campaign.

Varsity Head Coach Amber Beaueoin, along with Assistant Coaches Alicia Larkins and Richard Egglesfield, are preparing the girls for a three-peat.

“We have won the district championship the past two years in a row. We would like to make it three in a row and get farther in the post season,” said Beaueoin.

Having played at Fairfax High School years ago and served as varsity head coach since 2001, Beaueoin knows about Rebel field hockey. She also knows the potential of this group of hockey players led by 10 seniors and seven juniors. “We only graduated two players last year and have one of the best players in the region, Sam Zelenack, in addition to a great midfield.”

That great midfield includes juniors Shannon Parker and Shannon Cosgrove. Captains for Rebel field hockey are Cosgrove and utility player Paulina Tammaro.

To prepare for this season, FHS field hockey played in the Northern Virginia Field Hockey Winter League in addition to attending camp in Pennsylvania and participating in a summer league, which they won.

Rebel field hockey plans to keep putting the ball in the goal and improving their penalty corner play, according to Beaueoin. They want to be ready to play by the post-season, playing their best hockey by mid-October.

The Rebel head coach concludes, “We are going to play together, win together and focus on the post season.”
