Water, Sewer Bills to Increase

Residents and business owners will pay more for utilities.

The average Fairfax City resident* will pay $5.90 more in water taxes and $8.88 more in sewer taxes starting July 1.

Fairfax City Council passed the increase in water and sewage fees Thursday night as part of a . The water utility rate rose by 7.5 percent. Wasterwater increased by 12 percent.

These new fees will increase water utility revenues by $560,000 and sewer utility revenues by $430,000. The increases are meant to address rising water and sewer usage costs and offset minor infrastructure projects needed to meet federal guidelines.

Here's how the fee changes will hit your wallet:

Residents:

  • The water fee will go from $20.70 for the first 5,000 gallons used to $22.25.
  • It will cost $4.25 for every 1,000 gallons used after that initial 5K (used to cost $3.96).
  • The sewer fee will cost $21.67 for the first 5,000 gallons or less consumed during the billing period.
  • It will cost $4.14 for every 1,000 gallons used after that initial 5K.

Business Owners:

  • The water fee will go from $24.34 for the first 5,000 gallons used to $26.16.
  • It will cost $4.25 for every 1,000 gallons used after that initial 5K (used to cost $3.96).
  • The sewer fee will cost $25.49 for the first 5,000 gallons or less consumed during the billing period.
  • It will cost $4.25 for every 1,000 gallons used after that initial 5K.
  • Apartment buildings will pay $16.91 per dwelling per month in sewer fees (used to cost $15.10).
