Seeing a shift in Richmond, area activists are making a new push for driver’s licenses for undocumented workers.

More than 300 supporters met in Sterling last week to plan the new campaign.

"Driver’s licenses used to be for everyone. But after 9/11 everything changed,” said event organizer Noah Feldman. “Many politicians used the terror caused by the attacks to discriminate against immigrants. Politicians in Virginia seized this opportunity and took driver's licenses away from hard-working Virginia residents."

And all eyes are on Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat who has stressed bipartisanship in Richmond, with a conservative House of Delegates and a State Senate split between Republicans and Democrats.

"I voted for Terry McAuliffe. He won thanks to the Latino vote. It is time that he promises to return driver’s licenses to our community," said Jessica Robles, a citizen and resident of Herndon. "Every day there are too many hit-and-run accidents because many undocumented drivers are too afraid to show they have no driver's license, which means no insurance."

They are not "undocumented workers" they are illegal immigrants... i.e. people who crossed our border without permission and in violation of our laws. They should not be provided with any type of ID, much less a drivers license.

And if your children were starving, what would YOU do? Anything you had to, I'd be willing to bet. Educate yourself, exercise a bit of human compassion and maybe you'd see things differently.

Drivers licenses should be issued to ANYONE who drives on our roads in the US, for the safety of US Citizens. It is the responsibility of the Motor Vehicles agencies to A) Educate people on our laws (driving rules, speed limits, insurance requirements, alcohol limits, etc., B) To insure that Everyone has some type of insurance. Many people are under the impression that because we don't give them drivers licenses that they will not drive. WRONG. They will drive anyway, because 99% came here to work and support families. The Motor Vehicle agencies should not be spending state tax dollars to police Federal Immigration policy.
