Fairfax City Officials Give Tips for Hurricane Sandy

Mayor Scott Silverthorne, City Council share ways to stay safe during 'Frankenstorm'

The following message was sent to the Fairfax City Community on Friday by Mayor Scott Silverthorne and City Council. It appears unedited.

To the City of Fairfax Community,

A very large storm, Hurricane Sandy, continues to move in a northeasterly direction towards the Delmarva Peninsula with possible landfall between Sunday and Tuesday. City Offices are continuously monitoring the National Weather Service which is tracking the movement of this powerful storm to project its trajectory and timing.

The impact upon the City of Fairfax is uncertain at the present time but heavy rain and strong winds are possible with potential for power outages. I encourage each of you to prepare for the impact of this storm:

Build a Kit

  • Don’t rake leaves to the curb as this could block the storm sewer
  • Secure loose objects outside that could become projectiles
  • Make sure all rechargeable equipment, such as your cell phone, is charged
  • Ensure you have adequate food and fill temporary containers with water
  • Check and replenish your supply of batteries
  • Locate your flashlights and a battery-powered radio
  • Fill up the gas tank on your vehicle
  • If you live in a flood-prone area, prepare to relocate, if necessary
  • Never drive through standing water; turn your car around

Check on your elderly or disabled neighbors and be prepared to lend them a hand as needed.
