Now, the workers who man those precincts will see a slightly bigger paycheck for their efforts on election days, the county announced late last week.
The Fairfax County Electoral Board approved on Aug. 20 a compensation increase for Fairfax County election officers. Effective for the Virginia Nov. 5 General Election, the compensation will be:
- Election officer: $175
- Assistant chief election officer: $200
- Chief election officer: $250.
"Our election officers work very long hours on Election Day and it is not an easy job,” explained Electoral Board Secretary Brian Schoeneman. “Right now, we're not even paying them minimum wage for the more than 15 hours most often serve."
Schoeneman said, higher pay will help attract experienced, trained election workers for the county.
"The Electoral Board recognized that we needed to provide an increase in compensation to ensure that we retain our experienced election officers and to help attract new ones," he said. "The Electoral Board especially appreciates the increased financial support for the Office of Elections from the Board of Supervisors in light of the recommendations of the Bipartisan Commission, which allowed the Electoral Board to provide for this increase after many years of static pay.”
To apply to become an election officer, or for more information, county residents can:
