Bulova, Schoeneman Meet With Local Residents

The candidates for the House of Delegates met with several residents at Country Club Hills Commons in Fairfax City.

David Bulova and Brian Schoeneman met with residents at the Country Club Hills Commons in Fairfax City on Thursday. Rain caused a low turnout, yet offered a unique experience to meet with elected officials and their challengers in an intimate setting.

Chap Petersen and Gerarda Culipher, candidates for the State Senate seat, were also in attendance.

Schoeneman is challenging Bulova for his seat in the House of Delegates representing the 37th district.

Schoeneman has been a lobbyist, a property manager, a college administrator and even a blogger.

"The three things I'm proudest of -- I'm a husband, I'm a father and I'm a Virginian."

Bulova grew up in Fairfax County and went to Robinson Secondary School. The father of three has also coached baseball, soccer and is active in Boy Scouts.

"I wanted to be able to raise my kids in the same community that I was a part of," Bulova said. "I also wanted to make sure that we continue that quality of life that we are so proud of."

Transportation and traffic were issues that most of the residents in attendance shared, and Bulova made sure they knew he is and has been hard at work to improve this issue.

"I've been the guy who's gone down there and actually fought to change the funding formula that short-changes Northern Virginia," Bulova said.

Mike Passey is a local who, like many others, spends a good portion of his day in traffic. He decided to come to the event to become more informed about the issues that affect the community.

"I don't know that much about what is going on in the state of local politics," Passey said. "I thought this was a great opportunity to come out and hear directly from the candidates."

Passey, along with several others in attendance, got more than he was expecting.

"I thought it was a pretty good back-and-forth," Passey said. "I wasn't expecting a debate and we got one. To hear both sides was very useful for me as a voter."
