Scanner: Cars Trapped in Flood Waters, Accidents, People Trapped in Elevators

Firefighter activity around Fairfax City.

Fairfax firefighters are responding to a number of calls brought on by severe thunderstorms in the area. Here's what's on the fire scanner:

  • Swift water rescue in Oakton. Firefighters responding to reports of silver Mercedes stuck at Lawyers Road and Hunter Mill Road. Scanner chatter says there's water up near the top of the vehicle's tires. There's one person trapped in the vehicle.
  • Multiple cars stuck at Lawyers Road and Maple Avenue in Vienna. Water is up to drivers' doors. Firefighters enroute. [UPDATE 3:46 p.m. - Miscommunication. No cars trapped. Possible confusion with incident on Lawyers Road in Oakton.]
  • Maple Avenue at Center Street in Vienna is back open after flash floods swept through. The intersection of Church and Center is still closed. [UPDATE 3:57 p.m. - Intersection now open]
  • Swift water rescue at Maple Avenue and Center Street in Vienna. Firefighters enroute. Vienna police are on the scene. [UPDATE 4:06 p.m. - False alarm. "We towed and moved cars," said Bill Murray of the Vienna Police Department. "Nothing exciting or eventful."]
  • Firefighters are responding to reports of a two-car accident at Lee Highway and Prosperity Avenue in Merrifield.
  • Accident at Chain Bridge Road and Miller Road in Oakton.
  • Swift water rescue in process at Route 50 and Prosperity. Water halfway up tires.
  • Person trapped in parking garage elevator on Fairview Park Drive in Annandale.
