Police Warn of City Utility Worker Scam

Recent incidents have included impersonators claiming to be with Fairfax Water, according to Fairfax City Police.

Fairfax City is warning residents about a scam involving fake utility workers claiming to be with Fairfax Water.

The unknown suspects have attempted to gain access to homes and businesses, according to Fairfax City Police.

A similar scam has been used successfully in other parts of the region to distract a homeowner while a second individual robs the home.

The city's public safety departments offered tips for residents:

  • Ask the worker for identification.
  • Feel free to call the worker's company to confirm s/he is indeed an employee.
  • When contacting the office, use a reliable phone number available to the public to reach the proper authority.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the police department.
