Police Want to Know: Do You Use Your Cell Phone Behind the Wheel?

Take a short survey about distracted driving.

The Fairfax County Police Department is conducting a survey to determine how many people are actively texting and talking on cell phones while driving on roads in the county. You can take the survey on their website... just don't do it while behind the wheel.

This is part of a new campaign to get the word out about how dangerous distracted driving is. A 2009 study by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute provides some startling statistics on distracted driving:

  • Dialing a cell phone made the risk of a crash or a near-crash event in a passenger vehicle 2.8 times as high as non-distracted driving
  • Talking or listening to a cell phone made the risk of a crash or near-crash event in a passenger vehicle 1.3 times as high as non-distracted driving
  • Text messaging while driving a heavy vehicle or truck made the risk of crash or near-crash event 23.2 times as high as non-distracted driving.

The survey is short, 10 questions and two areas to add your comments. It was take only a minute to complete, two minutes tops.
