Fairfax police officer hit in Monday crash has been released; two young children in the striking vehicle remain at a local hospital.

Update 2:20 p.m.: Some questions remain around the drunk driving accident yesterday on I-66 that sent five people — including a Fairfax County police officer and two young children — to the hospital.

Patch initially reported the alleged drunk driver was carrying two young boys in her vehicle — both of them her sons.

Police said Tuesday afternoon they have not confirmed if the two boys were in fact the driver's sons.

Original: A mother who was allegedly driving drunk with her two young children along Interstate 66 has been charged with driving under the influence, hours after the woman's car hit a Fairfax County police cruiser late Monday night.

Diana Holloway, 26, remains at a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, department spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt told Patch on Tuesday.

Holloway's sons — ages 6 and 1 — are also being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Initially, but he has since stabilized, Gotthardt said.

Virginia State Police had issued a lookout for a suspected drunk driver in a 1993 Chevy late Monday night, which is why the Fairfax County officer was patrolling Interstate 66, Gotthardt said.

While he was patrolling, the officer saw another vehicle, a Toyota, commit a minor traffic violation. While the officer was in the process of pulling the Toyota over to the side of the road near Monument Drive, the 1993 Chevy he had been looking for — allegedly driven by Holloway — crashed into the police cruiser from behind.

The impact caused the police cruiser to rear-end the Toyota, Gotthardt said.

The officer, along with the the adult male driver of the Toyota, were both taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, but have been released.

Holloway will be processed at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center after she is released from the hospital.

FCPD will work with the county's Family Services to arrange proper care for the boys when they are cleared to leave the hospital.

"It's part of our responsibility to make sure those children are taken care of," Gotthardt said.

Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Since this article was first published, police have confirmed the correct spelling of Diana Holloway, which is now reflected in this article.
