Man Charged with Murder Right Outside Fairfax City Limits

Dispute leads to a 38-year-old Merrifield man being stabbed to death by his roommate.

Fairfax County police charged a Merrifield man with murdering another man inside his apartment in the 9100 block of Barrick St, just east of Pickett Road.

Jose Ivan Lopez Castro, 20, allegedly stabbed Oscar Rivera, 38, to death inside a bathroom in an apartment the two men were staying in, said Lucy Caldwell, a spokeswoman for county police.

“This is the fifth acquaintance homicide in the county this year,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell said detectives did not say what the dispute between the two men was about. Another person inside the home called police Tuesday who responded to the apartment around 5:15 p.m. Castro was picked up by police around 1 a.m. Wednesday and after detectives interviewed him, he was charged, Caldwell said.

Castro is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
